Has Anybody Ever Ran The Odds Of An American Being Killed By A Terrorist..
on U.S. soil?

I'm sorry that those 3000 people got killed on 9/11 - but if you take the population of this country into consideration (295,734,134 people) 3000 was only a very, very small percentage of Americans killed (by my calculation 0.0010144% - but somebody should check my math).

I know that is not the point that any American being killed by a terrorist is too many and serious.

BUT ---

with all the scare tactics that *Co is laying on the 'merikun people - "War on Terror"; "Fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here"; etc.

The odds are really low for any individual that any one individual 'merikun will actually be killed by a terrorist on U.S. soil.

I would think that there is more of a chance to be killed by being hit by lightening; being hit by a car or being hit by an errant birdshot shell discharged from Cheney's shotgun.

1. More people are killed by train wrecks...
but xenophobia is the tool Nazis use to gain and keep power.

2. In the scope of history and world population -
yes, 9/11 was actually an insignificant in loss of life. Hell, we lost thousands upon thousands during the Civil War.

It's the psychological aspect - the attack did happen on our soil, and a symbol of America's strength was completely destroyed. Fear. That's all that was needed for the big power grab; doesn't matter that the likelihood of it every happening again.

5. But - A Lot Of American's Are Gamblers.....
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 03:50 PM by global1
they go to Las Vegas, Reno, the Boats near Chicago, bet on sports, join office pools, etc. They know about odds.

If this whole terror fear was just explained to them in terms that they are familiar with - odds - couldn't we allay some of those fears?

I'm not saying don't protect ourselves against terrorist acts. Have inspections at airports, train and bus stations, ports, etc - try and minimize the threat as much as possible - which make the odds even better.

But - also explain that the chance for somebody to be killed by a terrorist in this country is very, very, very slim.

Let them know that maybe more of our tax dollars should be funding health care, food programs for the poor, etc - programs that keep American's alive.

Again - any person - those 3000 that were killed on 9/11 was a travesty. It should scare us and rightly so - but not so much that we are submissive to everything this *Co administration is fostering.

7. Fear is not rational
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 03:56 PM by sparosnare
And by invoking 9/11 all the damn time - the WH stokes the coals lest we forget. There's a reason why Osama hasn't been caught; if he was, then that fear would lessen because we finally caught the bad guy that caused 9/11. Instead, they allow him to keep roaming around and they keep reminding us that he may come to get us too. Boo!

I'm all for telling people that our tax dollars should fund other things, but who is going to tell them, and who is going to listen? Our media doesn't want to waste their time with that boring stuff.

A gambling analogy doesn't really work because when people gamble, they make the choice. It's partly a sense of helplessness; that something could happen suddenly at any time and we can't do anything about it. The WH has learned to use that very powerful feeling to it's advantage.

3. 1 out of 3 of us will get cancer. I'd rather spend my tax $ on research &
healthcare. I'll take my chances with the so-called "terrorist" attacks.

4. here's a useful chart
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 03:39 PM by Bill McBlueState
http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm

The chance of dying due to a lightning strike is 1 in 56,439 (0.0018%).

Almost twice as likely as dying in the 9/11 attacks (about 1 in 100,000; 0.0010%).

6. That would be rationalizing...just like bushco.
Dittoheads complain when Dems bring up military deaths, saying you are more likely to be killed in an auto accident in California than die in Iraq.
