Swiftboating of Katrina victims
Look at this:

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.cooper.360/blog/

Did Katrina evacuees bring more crime to Houston?
You won't find any public officials in Houston who will say, "Crime is up because of the Katrina evacuees." That's not smart politics. But you will find plenty of Houston residents who feel that way.

To tell the story of how the massive influx of evacuees has affected crime in Houston, we decided to visit the Fondren neighborhood in the southwest part of the city, because this is where many evacuees wound up settling.

The mainly working-class neighborhood, which consists mostly of low-rise apartment complexes, was plagued by crime long before Katrina evacuees arrived. But officers who work this beat say they've seen a significant spike in emergency calls since they got here. One officer told me, "Oh, we're a lot busier."

2. THE REAL CRIME
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 01:27 PM by Jeffersons Ghost
When an uncaring leader fiddles around like NERO while a major port floods, IT'S A CRIME!

When funding is reduced as an idiot with NO EXPERIENCE is appointed to run FEMA, IT'S A CRIME!

When storm victims are first left to starve and then later tossed into hopeless streets in unfamiliar cities, IT'S A CRIME!

WHEN WILL WE PROSECUTE THE CRIMINAL?

4. My apt. complex has some evacuees.
Some are great. Some I really want to move back to wherever they came from.

The first wave of refugees fled on their own, found the apartments, filed for vouchers, and mostly have jobs. We get along with them fine.

The second wave of refugees mostly were evacuated, the government found them apartments, gave them vouchers and chits for furniture, and mostly do not have jobs. We want some of them--and the increase in petty thefts and break-ins, the broken bottles, the all-night revelry (in warm weather, natch') gone, and the offensive and abusive language--gone.

Management also wants them gone. The lease renewal rate dropped in the months after they showed up. Some were read the riot act when they could be identified: evacuee or not, you and you're buddies get drunk and party, loudly, in public, till 3 am ... you're in violation of your lease. Cold weather mostly solved that problem. Having the voucher program end will solve most of the rest, me thinks.

5. So "offensive behavior and language" has risen
since the evacuees came in? How are you certain it is the "refugees" and not some new people in the complex?

6. When you have a huge migration such as Katrina....
And it doesn't matter what race they are....

You are going to be moving criminals along with the good, hard working Americans.

Just because they moved doesn't mean that the criminals are going to change their ways.

Some people will take advantage of the opportuntity to start over some won't.

You have increased the population significantly so I would think it would be logical to see an increase in crime.

8. They are not going to show those stories...
Because they would have to show that the people that are moving back are not doing well. The available housing/apartments have tripled in cost.(price gouging)

The infrastructure of the impacted communities is devestated.

Who knows what health issues are occurring with all of the toxic crap that was in the water, air etc.

Their usual mantra keep all of the bad news out of the public's eyes.

The entire Gulf Coast is in dire straights and * has yet to seriously go down there and address the people of the region.

I agree I want to see more stories come out about how this * administration has abandoned the Gulf Coast.
