Senator Lieberman Says U.S. Should `Dissolve' Embattled FEMA
Feb. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Joseph Lieberman, the senior Democrat on the Senate homeland security panel, said the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency should be abolished in light of its performance in handling Hurricane Katrina's devastation.

Lieberman, from Connecticut, said the agency, which oversees the federal response to natural disasters, should be taken apart and a different organization should be created in its place.

``It's time for FEMA as we know it to go,'' he said on ABC's ``This Week.'' ``It's time to dissolve and rebuild it within'' the Homeland Security Department.

2. DHS is Joe's contribution to our bureaucracy.
It's had a dandy record since its inception. Abolishing FEMA makes zero sense. Leave it to Lieberman to air this as a solution to our disaster-preparedness problem.

Just another reason why Ned Lamont is needed.

3. I think it already is....
dissolved that is...just a bunch of good-old-boy corporations that charge astronomical fees to do shitty work...with a few non-profits to back them up... How much more dissolved does he want?

4. Easy way to get FEMA working: appoint competent people
Under Bush(ver 1.0), FEMA was a dumping ground for cronies and political hacks. When Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, in 1992, FEMA couldn't do the job.
Clinton appointed professional James Lee Witt to be head of FEMA, and for 8 years, it did its job and performed admirably.
Bush(ver 2.0) reverted to his dad's appointment criterion and FEMA reverted to the 1992 performance level.
It ain't a god damn secret what it takes to get it working: professionals, competent professionals.

6. I think we should suggest dissolving the government at this point
or hiring competent people? What do you think?

8. Fema worked great for 8 years under Clinton
but admittedly it wasn't exactly terrific under either Carter or Reagan. Maybe FEMA has some structual problem.
