CO: Some leading state Democrats stepping up for Kerry
Rep. Diana DeGette and Rep. Mark Udall and a number of other leading Colorado Democrats are throwing their support behind Sen. John Kerry. DeGette, who represents Denver, and Udall, who represents Boulder and some mountain counties, said Kerry is on target with his issues and could run a tough campaign against President Bush. Udall said he wanted to announce his endorsement before Tuesday's primary in Arizona, where he was born and his father served as a member of Congress. He said he hopes his name recognition in that state could help.

Both DeGette and Udall cited Kerry’s record on environmental issues. DeGette also said Kerry has a record of trying to keep jobs in the United States.

"Now is the time for all of us to unite behind John Kerry, the one candidate with a history of winning the tough fights and the one candidate who will win the White House in November," DeGette said in a written statement on Saturday. DeGette will serve as a co-chair to Kerry's campaign in Colorado, working alongside former Sen. Gary Hart.

On Monday at noon, leading Democratic lawmakers will hold a rally on the east steps of the state Capitol to endorse Kerry, including Senate Minority Leader Joan Fitz-Gerald, D-Golden and House Minority Leader Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver. They will be joined by former State Senate President Stan Matsunaka, former State Senator and National Democratic Party Vice-Chair Polly Baca and former State Democratic Party Chairman Tim Knaus.

2. And he'll have Tim Wirth and Gary Hart campaigning there, too.
We'll HAVE Colorado in November. Count on it.

5. We're a hard state to crack
There's a strong urban/rural divide that makes it almost... purple. The influence of Denver, Boulder, and the outlying counties is countered by Douglas County and the Western Slope. From the outside, we look like a Republican lock right now, with two Republican senators and Gov. Bill Owens, a transplanted Texan and a special friend of W's.

However, unlike in Texas, the Dems-led by State Atty. General Ken Salazar-have so far been able to block the GOP's House redistricting plans; if this holds, CO-3 and CO-7 will be competitive. Further, the Allard/Strickland Senate race in '02 was within 75,000 votes, and Clinton/Gore won by 5% in 1992 and lost by only 2% in '96. If the national party threw us enough support, Colorado could conceivably be winnable.

I worry about the left's issues with Kerry, though, because our "fringe" is strong and very committed (Nader pulled 5% statewide in 2000). Oh, and Hart just decided not to run against Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, which is a tremendous confidence booster :eyes:.
