Why are some candidates considered "fringe" candidates. Some of the main
guys were polling in singe digits - like Al Sharpton and CMB - why are they not considered "fringe". I don't understand the difference.

1. um, they were
typically when someone says "fringe" candidates they mean Sharpton, Kucinich and CMB while she was running. As well as guys like Hamm and LaRouche.

3. I don't either.
The Republicans had their own in 2000 -- Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer, maybe Steve Forbes, and so forth.

where single payer healthcare is considered a "fringe" idea.

The corporate media's primary job is to ensure such "fringe" ideas don't catch on. And it works- look how malleable the populace is. Even at DU you here some of the more easily programmed posters referring to certain candidates as "fringe".

If your ideas are not acceptable to the establishment, you are considered "fringe"- it's the USDA stamp of DOA.

6. they primarily base it on polling
that only showed their support falling within the margin of 0.

secondarily on their political resume... If you have a Gov or Senator who is fairly high profile or from a larger state, then they'll avoid the fringe tag. Had Dean not caught on, being relatively unknown from a small state, he may have been considered fringe. Gephardt avoids it obviously because of his leadership position in the House. While Moseley-Braun was a senator, she was voted out of office and was dogged, perhaps unfairly, by her 1992 campaign finances.. plus she had two barriers to break that had never been broken before.
