The first woman to serve on the High Court wouldn't allow her actual words to be broadcast, and that's a shame, because -- based on Totenberg's report -- every American needs to hear what she said. The Reagan appointee who became a moderate and an American icon -- Bush v. Gore notwithstanding -- all but named names in thinly veiled attacks on former House majority leader Tom DeLay and Texas Sen. John Cornyn, and ended with a stunning warning.

O'Connor told her Georgetown audience that judges can make presidents, Congress and governors "really really mad," and that if judges don't make people angry, they aren't doing their job. But she said judicial effectiveness is "premised on the notion that we won't be subject to retaliation for our judicial acts." While hailing the American system of rights and privileges, she noted that these don't protect the judiciary, that "people do":

I wonder why she retired if she feels this way.

Going to Georgetown and warning people is one way to alert the American public to wake up.

I hope Ms. O'Connor rots in hell for her part in what the GOP has done to us.

If she wants to make amends, she better change her position and allow her opinion to be widely known. Otherwise, like Lady Macbeth, she'll never be able to wash all that blood off her hands.

I'm not sure I hope she "rots in hell" but I do think "mea culpas" are definitely in order from her in order to secure her reputation.

Hey, I know her hubby was sick, but still...Sandra...when we needed you most!

she said she had to resign in order to go back home to Arizona and take care of her ailing husband - but she took a position as chancellor at a college in Washington, knowing how the SCOTUS was going to be filled with white male fascists - Bush vs Gore was decided by her vote. She owed the American people for her terrible mistake. She left the SCOTUS with only one woman seated, knowing that the likes of Scalia would be nominated and pushed through to take her place. Her duplicity in creating the fascist state by these decisions will go down in history. Shame on her!

I for one don't think Alzheimers is something to use as punishment. Bush got into power for many other reasons, she should not be the whipped verbally as though she is entirely at fault. Roe V wade saved thousands of womens live for decades, she ways the deciding vote I believe in that matter.

There is ample blame to spread around, not to an old woman who now speaks out.

How hypocritical of her.

Considering Ms. O'Connor's well publicized and grotesquely inappropriate admission when she heard Gore was looking like the winner (that he was) in 2000 that she could not retire if he won, and considering her participation in the 5:4 judicial coup d'etat that year, I find her after-the-fact calling a spade a spade anemic.

If she felt this way so strongly, she should have stayed on the court and made a difference, at least until a Democratic president could replace her.

He was holding on to his position in the supreme court despite his poor health and wouldn't retire. That is how worried he was. I wonder if he and Sandra talked about this.
