LTTE: We all will pay for administration lies
Sheri McMahon letter: We all will pay for administration lies

Published Saturday, March 11, 2006
Our “what-me-worry?” president has led the charge against democracy and citizens for too long.

The Forum’s article about how the Medicare drug program is impacting area pharmacists reminds me that the Bush administration has a medical problem. It’s been serious for a long time, but it’s beginning to look more like a terminal illness.

The Katrina debacle – which also presented issues of national security and how this country is perceived by the rest of the world – doesn’t go away. The Bush who came in for a landing in full flight gear a few years ago is now in Afghanistan looking for Osama (the guy has got to be around here somewhere). The troops are saying they’ve done all they can, it’s time to go home.

Some of the administration’s embarrassments may be unfair – but whether it’s a blue dress or buckshot, it comes with the job. Of course multinationals operate our ports, and of course the corporate stratosphere has more important things to think about than petty isolationism. But wasting political capital leaves political figures with little in the way of an immune system against the common cold. Suddenly you have widespread organ failure – an “Enron moment,” as it were.

I wonder how many people are asking who they gave the keys to the nation to in November 2000 and whether it was a very big mistake. We can undo the mistake, but it takes a long time to rebuild after the damage that has been done. Whether or not we bought the lies, we’re definitely going to be paying for them.

People are waking up. When we shovel the dirt onto this administration, we need to make sure that the replacements are real, honest and accountable the the American people and not just a more benign version of the puppets in there now to carry on their agenda.
