Tracking Poll: Edwards Ahead in S.C., Clark Up in Okla.
Kerry Still in Front in Other States With Primaries on Tuesday
By John Whitesides
Reuters
Monday, February 2, 2004; 7:00 AM

Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) widened his lead over Democratic front-runner Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) in South Carolina and retired Army General Wesley K. Clark held a slim lead in Oklahoma a day before presidential primaries in those states, according to a Reuters/MSNBC/Zogby poll released Monday.

Kerry, still benefiting from a surge in momentum after wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, held commanding leads in Missouri and Arizona as seven states prepared to cast votes Tuesday in the Democratic race for the right to challenge President Bush.

Edwards increased his lead over Kerry from one to five points in the latest three-day tracking poll in South Carolina, a state Edwards says he must win to stay in the race.

Clark gained three points on Kerry in Oklahoma to hold a narrow one-point lead ahead of Tuesday's seven-state test, which could give Kerry a huge boost on his road to the nomination or give new life to Edwards and Clark.

2. Can somebody explain this quote?
from the article, I am so pissed, maybe I am too partisan to judge it:

"If Edwards wins in South Carolina and polls strongly enough to win delegates in Missouri and Oklahoma, he has some significant regional strength and can certainly make a case to go on," pollster John Zogby said.

"If Clark wins Oklahoma and comes in a strong second in Arizona, he also can move on -- but it is hard to see where."

Is this a fair statement?

4. Are they ever fair?
This is what I was talking about. All Edwards has to do to keep the media giving him wet kisses is win SC.

Clark would have to win at least 2 states to even be mentioned.

I don't usually believe in plots, but this primary has me with my tinfoil hat on half the time.

5. It's hard to see where?
:grr: Well, we'll just SHOW him WHERE, won't we? These people are evil.....and I mean EVIL! Zogby sucks. His polls mean nothing any more.

Go Wes!

6. I'm an Edwards supporter and I agree with you. What a jerk.
I believe that the answer is Michigan, Virginia and Washington.

8. Because the next round of votes are in states in which he is polling
not as well as the ones tomorrow. Seems fair to me.

9. Yes but...
didn't Kerry get a lot of "bounce" from his win?

He was polling in the toilet in the western states until he won something.

They give credit to the winner's bounce for helping Kerry and Edwards, but ignore the fact that it can help Clark too.

10. Clark is in 2nd place in Virginia, Tenn. and was doing well in Wisc.
Those are Feb 10 and 17 states...

There aren't many other polls that are terribly recent.
