1,000 semen-stained dresses hanging in the Oval Office.

Right about now I`m wondering...What do we tell that eighth grade civics class in Toledo? The Oval Office has been draped with the equivalent of 1,000 semen-stained dresses, but the Republicans who fought so vigorously to uphold the sanctity of the presidency and the bronzed bust of the founding fathers are mute. Did I miss the passage of a new rule? Have oral sex behind the desk and we`ll dig your eyes out, but our hands are tied if you kill thousands of people on a lie and sell America to the highest bidder? Um...weren`t we supposed to have some kind of a Red State Moral Thing going? Are they serious? They can show up to fight with Michael Schiavo but they`re silent about Quakers being wiretapped or White Phosphorus being dropped on innocent women and children?

Did I get it wrong or weren`t these Republicans supposed to be our moral compasses? Didn`t they all drip with so much piety that we could trust them with a blank taxpayer check or a few hundred helpless prisoners at Abu Gharib? I mean, if they revered the cells in Pitri dishes and things like our old growth forests, they`d certainly support the right of a legless Veteran for Peace holding an anti-war sign in Hoboken, right?

Does the whole damn place have to blow up before these folks get serious about what Bush has done to this country? Are we supposed to be so engaged in our shopping adventures that we nod in approval so long as we end up with a Clapper Lamp and some microwavable pancakes? Are the rest of us just whiners who want to carp about saving the whales? Maybe we`re pro-terrorists because we wince whenever we hear a Big R on Washington Journal call in to say our troops in Iraq are fighting to keep us free. They`re not. They`re fighting in Iraq because they were lied to.

One of the dresses hanging in the Oval Office right now has IRAQ written all over it. Another one has GENEVA CONVENTIONS. There are more: BUYING JOURNALISTS, WARRANTLESS WIRETAPS, TORTURE PLANES,
HURRICANE KATRINA, VALERIE PLAME, that famous PRESIDENTIAL DAILY BRIEFING prior to September 11th, WMDs and MUSHROOM CLOUDS, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, THE PORT DEAL, THE DRUG COMPANIES DEALS, THE TRADE DEFICIT, THE NATIONAL DEBT. I`d just as soon smack Bush with melting ice shelves and stalled stem cell research while I`m at it, for his sheer ignorance on the subjects. And, throw in the trade of nuclear technology for a load of mangoes or cheap Chinese screwdrivers for thousands of pink slips.

Fine. Guess I`ll have to change my ways. So what if some Anti-Terrorist Homeland Defense guy
starts videotaping me humming Give Peace A Chance. What I have to start worrying about is whether or not my neighbor is Gay and whether or not he`s patriotic enough to sport a pro-Bush bumpersticker on his old truck. This is worse than a bad dream. At least you get to wake up from one of those.
