VIDEO: Daily Show transforms Paul Hackett into a Dickless Democrat
This is painfully dead on. They take Paul Hackett, get advice from a Democratic consultant (I hope to God he isn't a real guy who gets work) and transform him into a bland, inoffensive, forgetable candidate.

At one point, the consultant says "An advantage we have right now is an opponent who keeps messing up," and the correspondent said, "Yeah, I was being mugged by a bum the other day, beating me with a bottle, and instead of fighting back, I was going to wait and see if he accidentally hit himself. Sure enough, he did." That about sums up what the "rope a dope," "keep your powder dry," or whatever the fuck you want to call it dumbass strategy looks like to the rest of us. We are getting mugged and Democrats think they will win because people because people will notice the mugging more than them doing nothing about it.

Whatever his flaws are, when you see Paul Hackett speak, you get the sense there's a person there, and he feels strongly enough about what he says that he will probably actually do it.

A lot of other Dems stick to such bland platitudes that you can't tell if they are pursuing them or not.

1. He is a real Dem consultant. I've seen him on Lou Dobbs.
That segment was a great synopsis of what the Democrats have been doing wrong.

what NOT to do.

4. The consultant was dull and boring.....
You are so right....he droned on and on...blah...blah..blah...as he was talking I thought this is why the Dems have no energy, no drive because of these kinda guys...

Hacket didn't fit the mold....and that's why they drove him out...Huge loss...

Sigh....

7. what's amazing is they took a guy like Kerry, who does have some
convictions and stood to the wealthiest criminals in America with Iran-Contra & BCCI, and made him look like a bland, dickless weasel too.

Kerry shares some blame for going along with it, but you would almost have to intentionally work at it to make him look as bad as he did.

16. All of our candidates - Gore, Kerry, Mondale, Edwards - have fire
They have principles and the damned machine chews them up and spits them out in 'easily electable' packets.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

27. i never noticed Gore's fire
until well after 2000. We could have used it BEFORE people voted for Bush. I love him now, but why did he play it so safe back then?

33. two possible explanations: bad consultants or fear of pissing off big...
money people--or both could be the same thing (consultants are telling you how not to offend the powerful, not how to attract voters).

8. I too agree
Somebody has to take control over this party and get its ass in gear.

Old school voices like that consultant have to go. He's the epitome of the long time consultant in any industry: spend 95% of your time justifying your existence and the other 5% covering your ass.

29. First of all,
welcome to DU. Secondly, I need to make a slight correction. The consultant on the Daily Show was a "New Democrat," i.e, triangulation, bought-and-paid-for by the same special interests who support the Republicans. The OLD SCHOOL Democrats would be people like Roosevelt, JFK, Johnson (love him or hate him, he was effective) and today, Feingold, Boxer and a VERY few others.

That aside, again, welcome to DU. :hi:

And really respect Hackett for his willingness to lampoon himself to make the point.

THAT's what I would like to see more of from my party's politicians.

17. Sounds like your opinion and not his.
making you no better than those who "told" him not to run.

Self righteousness via a purity test has left us with a bunch of weak uncharismatic chicken liver poll driven Democrats.... that I'm sure you admire and revere considering that they are passing your purity test. :eyes:

24. I gave a contribution to IAVPAC today. I really like
these "NON-politicians". What a breath of fresh air!

Did anybody see Steve McMahon, the supposed Dem operative/spokesman, on Tweety last night?
When Tweety asked him why Dems are perceived as weak on National Security, he started stuttering and said "I don't know". Then he turned to Kate O'Bern and said, "You answer that question".

Yikes! bring on the fighting Vet Dems! Many of them, like Eric Massa, are directly calling out Karl Rove and challenging the false reasons that we went to war. They're also blasting cuts to medicaid, Bush's CAFTA, and that medicare-drug boondoggle. My particular favorites are the environmentalists among them.

37. Chamber of Commerce candidates--they run in both parties
Most of politics is pursuing business by other means. Business prefers to use Republicans because their voter base pays next to no attention to bread and butter economic issues. They are too worried about guns, god, and gays. But in an area where a Republican candidate doesn't have a reasonable chance of winning, the Chamber of Commerce incubus moves to a willing Democrat host--most obviously in the case of ass weasels like the the two joes, Biden and Lieberman, and more subtly in the case of one of my senators, Dianne Feinstein, whose husband got an Iraq reconstruction contract.

The window dressing is different on the GOP and Democrat versions of the Chamber of Commerce candidates, but both will just as happily ignore the voters when there is money to be made.

This is the real divide in the Democratic party, not between left and center, but between bought and free.
