Pictures of the Portland anti-war march (3/19/06) *dialup warning*
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 09:15 PM by Elad
I just got home from the Portland march/rally, and it was great. The weather was perfect, 55 degrees and sunny, and the crowd was extremely large and energetic. I'm not good at estimating crowd sizes, so I'm not going to attempt it, but you can judge by the pictures. Bear in mind that when I was taking the crowd shots, there were still several streams of people filing in from various directions.

I didn't see any arrests and as far as I know there were no major problems.

Large crowd shots

Misc shots

Here I am, in the gray hoodie and DU hat (although you can't tell that's what it is)

5. Fantastic... We Had A March Yesterday... But Down Here In
Cruella Land, it was quite a bit smaller. But much larger than we expected! We even got some local TV coverage for the two days of marching. I was actually in both TV shots all by myself! It was quick, but it was me!

For some totally DUMB reason, I forgot my camera... maybe because I was concerned with my sign. I'm waiting for downloads from the FloridaForPeace so I can see the pictures. A LOT of younger New College students which was encouraging! Had it not been for them, I don't think it would have gone so well!

We marched to Katherine Harris office, and chanted. But these pictures are really something! I sure wish we weren't so RED in this county. We did roadside demonstrations the first day, and the second day was the march with a roadside demonstration afterward. We got a lot of cars honking in support and it felt good!

I've come to the realization, as did many many of the people with me, that unless we take to the streets, NOTHING is going to get done! The WH is maniacal, and the Representatives and Senators are sitting on their asses for the most part. Repukes & Dems!

We have to mount our own "insurgency" right here in this country!

18. Awesome Portland
The arrival of my first grandchild prevented me from making the protests in Ashland but a sign I made for Bush's 2004 visit to Medford evdently was there in my place. http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2006/0319/local/stories/05local.htm

Now that I have another generation to care about I am really going to take them on. I owe this kid his country back.

Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 10:58 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
3 1/2 hours of solid people. We were closer to the front than the middle, and when we finished, there were still people passing the halfway mark.

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Elad, did you take the pictures from the bridge before the march?

If you did, under the trees on the left were Reader Rabbit, FreedRadical and me.

PDXBecca was there too, we ran into her after the march.

THOUSANDS!!!

My feet really hurt. :)

On edit: The Anarchy kids tried to cause some trouble on Burnside. They were in the middle of the march and started taunting the cops, stopped the whole march dead, then the crowd just split around them and kept going.

I got many shots from up on the bridge, it was really spectacular to see all those people from up there, and all the trails of people still making their way in. We also got a *lot* of honks from passing cars. :)

Radio call - ins to pdx imc web radio on March 19th Day of Action. All call times are for west coast/portland.

1:21 - Portland - 150 at the Waterfront for the Code Pink Feeder March.

2:11 - Portland Legal - PLDN says the feeder marchers are joining with the main march at the waterfront. The crowd is estimated at over 1000. The speakers have not yet started and the start of the march still seems a bit far off.

2:46 - Burnside Bridge - The march started about 10 minutes ago, led by Veterans for Peace and Military Families Speak Out. There is a group of people chained togather, walking with hoods over their heads. More than 1000 people. People are super stoked, there is a drum corps and it is a great day!

3:07 - Waterfront - March is just leaving the park, there are alot of people, at least a shitload plus. The speakers have just finished, people are stretching out as far as the caller can see.

27. It was indeed a beautiful day
Our church group turned out about a dozen folks, I was carrying my spanking new "All War Is Sin" sign with the Church of the Brethren logo on it. We had a wonderful time on the march; local news grudgingly admitted to a crowd of "eight to ten thousand," which makes me think that my personal estimate somewhere around 30,000 was correct.

And with all those marchers, there were no arrests. One freeloading nut with his anti-abortion sign, blaming it all on the Democrats (as if Republicans never have abortions), but everyone seemed to ignore him, and I think he went away rather disappointed that he wasn't able to make the rally all about him, him, him.

As we were assembling for the march, some young men on their bikes were tooling around, getting an eyeful. They sped off with one of them shouting, "Bush! All right! Yay Bush!" I hollered after him, "Enlist!"

We had one freeper. Some old guy heckling from his balcony... his wife was watching quietly. When we all started chanting, staring up at him and giving him the peace sign, she kept stepping back like she didn't want to be seen!

42. Wow! Way to go Portland!
Boy am I jealous! After all of our hard work we were only able to get about 300 to 400 people assembled for our march and rally here in Phoenix! Phoenix is a much larger metropolitan area than Portland. Even though our event went well, we were disappointed at such a small crowd. O.K., Arizona IS a RED state, and we DID lose our local Air America Radio station on March 1st, which I'm sure had an impact, but how do you get people to leave their own little comfort zone and take a stand??? I'm stumped.....
