Some Political Ads on Net to Be Regulated

The Federal Election Commission is set to extend its rules about political ads to some Internet Web sites, it said, to ensure political committees properly finance and disclose their Internet communications.

The FEC is expected to approve its proposal at its meeting March 27.

In general, the FEC is set to require that candidates for federal office disclose their spending on advertising that appears on a Web site or accompanying an Internet search result.

A large swath of the Internet is excluded. According to a 96-page draft of the rules made public March 24, excluded are bloggers who don't take paid political ads and politically focused e-mails sent to less than 500 addresses at a time.

1. I think I could provisionally agree with that

in theory, in a fantasy universe, just so long as the definition of "ad" and "advertiser" is scrupulously defined, and that most certainly would not include bloggers or native content under ANY circumstances.

Clearly though, this is targeted legislation, and I have a feeling it's not republicans who will be targeted by it.

I'm surprised no one has brought it up. Regardless of how narrowly "advertisment" might be defined, you know the rightards will try to get these forums shut down.

and probably any website with more than 500 members, or at least they'll have to shut down those websites while they "investigate" . . . for about a year.

It's another 'conunist (neo con-unist) plot.
