1. Lincoln and TR were decent. Beyond them...
...can't honestly say no.

15. Wasn't Eisenhower considered pretty good?
I was just born during that time, so I wasn't following politics, but some of his quotes were pretty insightful.

21. Ah, indeed...I like Ike more than Lincoln, in fact.
He tried his best to warn us.

18. Nah, Lincoln was pretty corrupt in his own way, suspending
habeas corpus and generally attacking civil liberties.

Most of them were just venal, an attribute I'd assign to men like Harding and Hoover, whose cabinets did all the stealing.

Eisenhower was the last basically decent Repug. Nixon was a mixed bag who cared about the country but let his personal demons get in the way. We all know what totally corrupt SOBs Reagan, Poppy and Stupid are.

Once Reagan made the deal with the devil and handed the party to the religious wack jobs, the game was over. That party has no hope of decency until that alliance breaks down.

2. It's never been like this before.

I'm serious. Cronyism, corruption, incompetence, partisanship and pandering have always been with us. But these republicans today are making it into an artform, not just that it's done so much more, but that it pretty much explains everything that's done. Good luck finding a principled stand anywhere near the republican party on any subject.

Similarly, Reagan was super conservative, but W. is like Reagan in a funhouse mirror.

And they lie about everything. Part of it is that they know their policies are indefensible and they need to cover up incompetence, but sometimes they just hide the truth as an M.O.

Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 09:53 PM by Inland
they were evading the law with Iran Contra, true, but they didn't ever claim that laws didn't count.

They weren't lining their own pockets.

Whereas Bush basically works that way every single fucking day.

5. Sure, but when they were the minority party it didn't seem as bad...
For 40-some years the Democrats controlled congress and kept a lid on it. Then in 1994, the GOP took control and the Republicans went wild. Sort of like kids in a candy shop or rummies in a liquor store with nothing to stop them.

And they lie, lie, lie.

8. In my mind....
Republicans have been corrupt since 1980 which is about 26 years, they weren't so bad before guys like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson came into the party setting up the church goers as there main base.

But the 'Pukes have been attracted to big money and corruption since US Grant was president - he apparently had a record of crony appointments that would've given W a run for his money.

William McKinley's campaign manager, Mark Hanna, is considered a role model by Karl Rove. 'Nuff said.

Warren Harding - big business lover
Calvin Coolidge - ditto
Herbert Hoover - same thing. His inability to address the Great Depression (the shanty hamlets on the edge of towns were called Hoovervilles) and the Bonus Marchers incident in the summer of 1932 did him in and FDR was elected.

Ike Eisenhower - OK, but he had too much a worship for big business.

Nixon. . .'Nuff said.
Reagan. . .'Nuff said.
Bush I . . .'Nuff said.
Bush II . . .'Nuff said.

17. No....until Nixon they were mostly honorable, if out of step.
And Nixon was great at seeing the big picture internationally. As a matter of fact, Nixon and JFK, when they were in Congress, had offices across the hall from each other and were pretty good friends.

Now, McCarthy.....he was just evil, and crazy and luckily was never president!!

Eisenhower was a war hero that both parties wanted, and the GOP got. My Daddy voted for him the first time because he served under him, but that was the ONE and ONLY vote for a Republican he ever made...swore off after that!

Gerald Ford helped bridge us from Watergate, but I believe he is honest and honorable, with the exception of his work on the Warren Commission, along with Arlen Spector. (Another subject for another day)

Reagan was inept and had Alzheimer's MUCH earlier than anyone wants to go on record about. It was the liars and fascists around HIM that got us into so much trouble.

As far as I am concerned....Bush41...no real harm,no real foul.

Keeping the money in the hands of just a few means your gene pool shrinks along with your brain power.

27. Never stupid, always corrupt. And fascist.
They plotted to overthrow FDR in 1933 and replace him with a handpicked, Mussolini-style fascist dictator. True story. Google for "Plot to overthrow FDR" if you don't believe me.

the beginning of human beings on the planet. I venture to guess that the majority were not and are not now. It does seem that the majority of them were and are though, doesn't it?

Now the coruption and dishonesty is an Art form. Con art, that is. hehe
