WOW! Chicago Defender (oldest Black paper in US) blames McKinney for mess
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 10:29 AM by wndycty
And I agree:

EDITORIAL: McKinney showed bad judgment by disobeying rules

by Defender Editorial
April 6, 2006

There is little doubt that racism is alive and well in 2006. But what is unfortunate is when elected officials cry racism, when instead, their bad decisions made a situation unnecessary.
-snip-

It is her arrogance that is the reason behind this. She has tried to frame this issue as racial profiling, and others have said that the officer should never have touched her. But her actions led to the confrontation, pure and simple.

McKinney has long been a freedom fighter, willing to stand up to oppression and fight for African Americans. She had the courage to question the Bush Administration for a variety of reasons, even losing her seat because of her unwillingness to alter her views to satisfy her critics.

We have stood with McKinney, but rallying around her on this issue is beyond us, and her actions are indefensible. She may not be able to get out of this jam with an apology. If the grand jury indicts, there will be a trial, and likely some sort of plea.

Look at eh slogan on its front page:

Honest. Balanced. Truthful. Unapologetically Black!

As an African American from Chicago and a long time Defender reader I hope you are being sarcastic.

58. The same thing happened to the Los Angeles Sentinel

It was once owned by a very kind Republican Black family.
Then it was sold to Danny Blackwell, Black in name only and probably Republican.

During the time of the Kerry Campaign, I started following the election.

Instead of the headline saying, GET OUT THE VOTE, there was a HUGE color photo of Condi Rice calling her the most important Black American in the WORLD!

I called that paper and let um all know, from the switch board receptionist to the Editor, that they may be Black but they were working for a SELL OUT Republican.

By the time I finished, they were begging me to write a letter to the editor (I'm sure it would not have been published) and begging me to meet with them so they could change things(they had as much power as a flea.}

IMO, Republicans have put big money into the hands of African American Newspapers and it is a miracle that my people have been able to think for themselves as much as they do.

I think we have the same situation here.

62. Do you guys know what the hell you are talking about?
The paper is owned by Real Times Inc and its Chairman is Tom Picou, nephew of John Sengestack the founder of the Chicago Defender.

It appears many DUers see black folk that don't act the way they want them to act and question who they are.

Its a damn shame that you guys are spouting off without know the damn facts.

She is extreme to the empth degree, Majette should still be in that seat. If mckinney wears her pin this never happens.IM glad the cop tried to stop her, thats his job. SHe blames him for doing his job and doesnt accept any of the responsbility. SInce she is a member of congress THE COP should have expected for her to react that way, but her unwillingness to even accept that she was at fault and play the race card is lame.

8. Majorette was elected by republicans. just whose side are you on?
Majorette probably supported the war, that is bankrupting this nation, and killing hundreds of thousands of people every year (conservative estimate). That is nothing that can compare to that kind of extremism.

McKinney opposes the war, and you call her an extremist?!?

I don't know the details of whay happened between her and that cop. But as far as McKinney's overall stance against the war and for a saner policy in the Middle East, she is right on target.

For cryin out loud, Zell Miller was the one behind Majorettes rise.

profiling as an excuse for her bad behavior.

It was a very cheap shot and did not serve her well. But the public has a short memory and I wouldn't worry too much about it!

She angered many people including members of the black caucus and her own party and DUers have a right to call her on it.

Care to prove it? SHow us evidence. Also, how do you know they don;t get stopped when "half of Congress" doesn't wear their ID's. Are you aware that there are 535 members of Congress? It seems to me like a tall order for a cop to remember 535 faces? Especially if the cops are rotating shifts and positions.

Questions and Answers About Congress
How many members of Congress are there?
There are in 535 Members of Congress. Congress is split into two branches, the House of Representatives and the Senate. There are 435 Representatives in the House (called Congressmen or Congresswomen) and 100 Senators in the Senate.

I get sick of the white liberals who acted like the ultimate defenders for black people, anyone who is white and disagrees what they believe no matter what the situation is wrapped in white bed sheets and labeled a racist. I mean what their doing is out and out racist period, kind of taking black people putting them in a little special group for them to care for and have their best interest in mind. It's like White liberals who are the defenders of black people pump up Black history month, when it shouldn't even exist I'm white but I see it as a slap in the face of African Americans because it's singling people out instead of including them with the rest of American History.

15. It's Good The Defender Has Said This
The marvel of DU...a world where all Repugnicans are corrupt, evil, racists, mysognists, homophobes and track mud on mom's clean carpet and all Democrats are saints. :sarcasm: (well at least the portrayal of Repugnicans is correct)

Rep. McKinney got caught up in the events and soon a story she thought she was controlling was controlling her. Her initial action brought out those who knew how to push her button...primarily the corporate media and this story went into hyperdrive. What should have been settled in the Security office of the Capitol was fueled by two sides with ruffled feathers...each instigating the other. The more McKinney reacted, the bigger a fool she appeared...and all over what everyone agrees was a trivial matter.

I have tremendous respect for Roland Martin...and I can see how McKinney's grandstanding trivializes the serious issue of racial profiling. There's a big difference between being stopped primarily because you didn't have the proper badge as opposed to being stopped in a white suburb because the car you're driving doesn't fit the profile of what a "black drives".

There needed for some perspective to be put here and the Defender had done it. Hopefully Rep. McKinney's appology will take this issue off the corporate media radar and within the next couple weeks we'll learn that the entire matter has been dropped. Time to move along to issues that really matter...

:hi:

Of course, to those who will defend McKinney at all costs, this is just proof that those blacks who didn't defend her are just sell-out Uncle Toms. That's right - John Lewis and John Conyers and Maxine Waters and Bruce Gordon and Jesse Jackson and Dorothy Height and Al Sharpton are cowards who don't know half as much or have anything close to the integrity and courage of DUers.

She was minding her own business, on her way to the next appointment, meeting or vote as most Congress People do -- without badge or ID -- and the COP didn't recognize her and grabbed her from behind...

How is that "getting in that shit"?

38. It was her reaction and race baiting
If a cop asks you to stop and you keep on walking, then you poke or "assault" (I use that word apprehensively)the officer after he makes yoi stop, THAT is completely stupid. That's only the first act of irrational stupidity. The second was when she started holding press conferences and calling attention the issue. The third was calling the cop a racist. It is his JOB to stop people from entering the building without showing ID. WHy are all of you so quick to throw out your ethics when it's a Democrat? She acted unethically, and irrationally. I don't think she needs to resign or anything, I just wish she quitely apologized in private and didn't provoke the other side. ESPECIALLY the race baiting, it's a typical charge the right uses against us. And in this cae they might actually be right. If you'll notice, the Democratic leadership AND te Black Caucus didn't support her. That's pretty important.

50. That's your warped view of events as "reported"
Mine differs and gives the benefit of the doubt to Cynthia McKinney (since I've seen enough of how cops act to understand what probably occurred -- the tone of voice, the nuance) and how about the fact that SHE DIDN'T HEAR HIM UNTIL HE GRABBED HER ARM??????

Read the accounts of the actual incident, not the repuke and chicken-shit Dems' talking points about it.

54. There should be no bias in either direction
You bias yourself instead of reading the incident in plain terms. It's your own take on the situation, not the situation itself.

You know, it doesn't even matter if she heard him or not, she didn;t stop, he needs to check for ID's. I imagine you can understand that Washington DC security is pretty tight.

to id her. she should have just said I'm sorry, I didn't hear him ask me to stop. and that when he grabbed me I was startled. see how easy that is, makes her and by extension the dems look like responsible people.

36. It's bizarre to me
that Dems can keep losing power and still must form the circular firing squad.

It's bizarre to me that alleged "liberals" take the side of a cop over one of the most progressive forces in the Congress.

That's what's bizarre.

'Cause the media, the repukes and a few knee-jerks here said it?

Even the media doesn't make that case. The media I've read makes it sound to me like an understandable reaction between a WHITE COP and a strong black women in the bizarre pressure cooker the repukes have made of the halls of Congress.

53. What the hell are you talking about?
"WHITE COP and a strong black women"

That comment right there is racist in itself. You call attention to both races, one in a demeaning way and the other in a positive way. I'd say you are letting your anger cloud your vision. I'm white, does that make me a racist if I I enforce a rule on someone who happens to be non-white? What if the person is a christian white man and I enforce some rule, am I then a christian hater (because I obviously wouldn't be racist), so there must be some other stereotypical evil reason for my enforcing the rule because I happen to be white?

Take a look at your position on this, it makes no sense.

60. WHAT DAMN RULE????
From all I've read, there's no rule that a congress person must wear the button or show the id all of the time.

I'm sure that there is a job description, written or unwritten, that implies that guards should know Congresspeople by sight.

As for your comments about racism; this society is SO imbedded in racism, the conditioning of both white and black in the customs and thought patterns of racism SO heavily reinforced, the power relationships between whites and any other hue made starkly clear by all of the media and "popular culture", that yes, every interaction must be understood to be one that has elements of this society's racist core in it.

To be ignorant of this pervasive undercurrent in western society makes no sense.

61. Doing their job
I remember the Rodney King Insurrection. The cops were completely pulled out of Compton, etc. and were deployed as a wall to prevent any of "them" from getting to the affluent areas of L.A.

That's the cops doing their job.

I remember the night of Nixon's election when our little peaceful demonstration in downtown Palo Alto was surrounded by 250 San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputies with clubs -- beating heads -- allowing no-one to escape the beating.

When the rubber meets the road, that's the cop's primary job--to protect the "good elements" of society against the "thems". Forget that at your peril.

If the facist takeover of the U.S. is completed the cops'll be the ones delegated to come for you...

Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 08:57 AM by danalytical
I don't know that for a fact, but lets say that's correct. How is a man working 9 to 5 supposed to identify 535 members of Congress? Is he supposed to stop them if he doesn't recognize them?

I think you might be fooling yourself with that argument. Because I know I can't recognize 535 people by face, so either they are required to stop and show ID if they aren't recognized, or they ARE supposed to wear their ID lapel. I work in a large organization and I am REQUIRED to wear my ID badge at all times when I am on campus.

Showing ID or wearing the pin is not a rule. So not showing/wearing ID is not violation of a rule - contrary to what the title of the article implies.

45. Hardly matters
If the security doesn't know you and you have no ID. You are going to be asked to present ID. Whether or not it's "required" makes no difference at all. You can't expect the security to recognize 535 members of congress, who knows how many congressional aides, all sorts of political appointees, etc etc. It matters not my friend.

is a WHOLE LOT DIFFERENT from having someone suddenly grab you from behind.

She already said she didn't hear the guy. Why the f*ck should she. It's fair to assume that some cop calling out "Madam!" is not calling out to her...she belongs there more than he does!

52. I think you guys are reaching
We are talking about a highly secure area. This isn;t a local Walmart. People don;t just walk in and out without wearing ID if they are not recognized. Now the comment about grabbing someones arm, well she didn;t stop after he called after her. What's he supposed to do let her keep walking without producing ID at a SECURITY checkpoint.

59. We don't know exactly what happened.
Does he stop every person who doesn't have their pin? Does he allow people he recognizes go by?

Was he confused by her hair style? Or would he have not recognized her either way?

Did he recognize her? Did he stop her to make a point?

Did she ignore his calls? Did she just happen not to hear him?

Did he block her path? Did he grab her from behind?

Did she slap/punch him? Did she poke him?

There have been instances of odd treatment towards other black congresswomen (McKinney has spoken about being stopped in the parking lot on several occasions before). Is this another instance; we don't know. We'll have to wait to see the tape.

76. It's not a rule, but it certainly makes things easier
It's difficult for the Cap police to recognize every member. If she wasn't recognized, the simple response would have been, "I'm a Member of Congress" or "I'm Cynthia McKinney." That would have been the end of it. Her insisting that she was stopped because she was black is ridiculous and irresponsible. She was stopped - as she should have been - because, recognizing her or seeing her ID pin, she appeared to be a civilian going into the Capitol without going through the metal detector. Plain and simple.

77. Look at this biased LA Times headline about Ms McKinney:
Headline: Voters Rethink Rep. McKinney

Makes it sound like everyone is against her, right? But look at their findings:

1. "Her apology was fine," Owens said from the food court of the South DeKalb Mall, just east of Atlanta. "The media needs to put it to rest."

2. A few tables over, plumber Marvaine Butts said McKinney was probably right to believe she had been singled out by the officer because of her race. "I understand where she's coming from as far as the racial profiling," Butts said. "I get plenty of that." He, like McKinney and Owens, is black.

3. Khalil King, a businessman, said he wasn't sure he would vote for her again. "I just feel like she's overreacting," said King, who is black.

4. This week, Georgia Republican Party Chairman Alec Poitevint called on (Secretary of State Cathy) Cox or (Lt. Gov. Mark) Taylor to publicly admonish McKinney. When they didn't, Perdue drove the point home.

So apart from the Republicans, only #3, one out of the 5 people in the findings, appear to be against what she did. Yet look at the headline.
