Joseph Stiglitz on the trillion dollar war
INTERVIEW WITH NOBEL LAUREATE JOSEPH STIGLITZ

"...discusses the true $1 trillion cost of the Iraq conflict, its impact on the oil market and the questions of whether the West can afford to impose sanctions on Iran. "

http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/spiegel/0,1518,409710,00.html

"Stiglitz: The only people benefiting in this war are Bush's friends in the oil industry. He has done the American economy and the global economy an enormous disfavor, but his Texan friends couldn't be happier. The price of oil is up, and they make money when the price of oil goes up. Their profits are at record levels."

2. Why does this seem so obvious to some of us, and such an enigma to others

:silly:

I heard a soldier back from Iraq talking on NPR yesterday. He was talking about the fighting, and how we had to "Win this war" and we just had to face the fact that "collateral damage" was a fact of life during war! Civilian deaths just had to be a part of getting these insurgents!!!

I was so pissed that the host never asked him exactly what it was this soldier thought we were fighting for over there?
Did he actually think that killing the Iraqis was the best way to "introduce Democracy" to them?
Did he realize that these "insurgents" would not be there if we had not invaded Iraq in the first place?

I truly believe that most of those guys who spout these platitudes have no idea what they are fighting for. The only ones who have any idea of what is really going on are the ones who see how senseless it all is.
