<snip>

Six months after Prairie Wind hit stores and with Heart of Gold still in theaters, Neil Young has reportedly finished an anti-Bush album. At last month's South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, rock icon Neil Young was asked about his songwriting process, and how he gets himself ready to make a record.

"When you get on a roll, you can't disturb it," he said at the time. Young reportedly just finished another one of those rolls. Even though he released his latest album, Prairie Wind, last September, and Jonathan Demme's Heart of Gold performance documentary hit theaters in February, Harp Magazine reported today that Demme himself said Young just finished writing and recording a new album.

This time, Young reportedly eschewed the mellow flavor of Prairie Wind in favor of a "a brilliant electric assault on Bush and the war in Iraq," according to Demme. According to HITS, the new album's linchpin track, "Impeach the President," features an edited-together Bush speech set to a 100-voice chorus chanting "flip"/"flop." The album reportedly took three days to finish.

4. The man who writes that blog
used to be head of a great big record company - I don't remember which one - and my friend who sent me that link used to work for him and really adores him.

Good, huh?

11. Moi
That's such a nice thing to say! Thank you. Neil has been a real inspiration to me since I was in college. Imagine when I wound up as the head of Reprise, the label he is signed to! Anyway, like I said on DWT, I went over and listened and it is really great-- like REALLY great. I promised his manager I wouldn't write about it til Wednesday. But on Wednesday I'll post a review on my site. I feel like I've been very lucky to have met Neil and gotten to know him a little. I can't say that about every famous person I've met-- not even about all the accomplished ones. But I can say it about Howard Dean too!

14. Welcome to DU, DownWithTyranny
Your blog was a great read!

Neil's music excels at capturing the mood and sentiments of people who are aghast at the crimes and inhumanity of their government

I'm looking forward to reading your Wednesday entry.

15. That's YOU!?!
Well, welcome to DU!

And thank you so much for all you've written and shared at DWT. My friend, your fan - who will remain nameless here, natch - is really a huge fan of yours, and now, as you can see, so am I.

I must tell you that that post about Young's album came to me on one of those days when I was sure I'd lost my last scintilla of hope. Your news roused me and my heart, and the fight is back on.

Thank you.

6. Wow...Quite a preview:
Every song is about... you know what (and who). Musically it is so powerful and emotionally it's even more powerful that that!! Many tears while I sat alone with the headset on. Since I already mentioned "Let's Impeach the President," I'll just say a few things about that. It's this great rocker that ends as a gospel song and reads like an indictment. I mean Neil sounds like he's been reading Daily KOS or FireLakeDog! Someone's gotta get this to Henry Waxman! Neil even lays out some evidence in the form of Bush running his mouth on tape.

Will this go down as Neil's greatest album ever? It will be a contender musically. And the impact lyrically could be profound. I'll talk more about that when my period of musical purdah is up next week. If you're walking down the street and someone comes up to you and offers you the opportunity to hear just one song, ask him to play "Flags of Freedom." (Have kleenex handy.)

7. I said to my friend who sent me that yesterday
that Young's been incredibly prolific and focused since his recent brush with death (aneurysm), and I think, maybe, that his genius is being realized in a whole new way, with a whole new direction.

I nearly cried when I read about this album. I wish it could come out tomorrow.

8. I'm a big fan too
I like a lot of his odd stuff
I saw him with Booker T and the MGs (Steve Cropper on guitar) as "The Bluenotes" a couple times and really liked his trance period (Trans) with Nils Lofgrin.

Of course anything with Crazy Horse was great and I saw him in the CSN&Y2k tour.
Saw him acoustic with a guitar, harp, and a piano a few times and he's great like that too.

I imagine I'll like this disc too.
Can't wait.

18. Bring "Impeach the President" to mainstream: iTunes! Will you download?
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 02:14 PM by Fiendish Thingy
If Neil Young allows his new song "Impeach the President" to be downloaded on iTunes (and the whole album for that matter), DU could help make it #1 on the iTunes list, which is displayed on Apple's home page as well.
If he does, not only will I buy the CD (it's important to buy it the first week it comes out), I will also spend 99 cents to download it from iTunes.
If we're REAL lucky, Neil will agree to let Apple list it as the "single of the week" which means it's a FREE download for that week! It would shoot to the top!

Edited to add:
If this song gets on iTunes, nobody, not Clear Channel, the MSM, nobody will stop it from being easily, cheaply available in millions of homes (and on millions of iPods) across the USA...
Now, my dream would be a Neil/Bruce/Dixie Chicks tour (with Pearl Jam too?); Well, I'm sure some of them will be touring separately this summer...

Edited yet again to modify subject line and add:
WooHoo! I just checked the iTunes store, and Neil's got lots of tracks available there, including his latest CD, Prarie Wind!

Alright DU'er's, here's my challenge:
Will you commit, right now, to downloading "Impeach the President" from iTunes as soon as it's available? (regardless of whether you buy the CD or not, or whether you like Neil or not?)

19. Neil has a cosmic vibe and it's effective as hell in the everyday world.
I think that's his secret.

Some great songs and a haunting voice, and an almost holy presence.

Secularly holy maybe, but holy nevertheless.

He gets to the essence in a hurry.
