US government wants PayPal records

April 13, 2006 08:46
The US government has ordered online auctioneer eBay's payment service PayPal to turn over records that could expose foreign accounts where tax cheats have hidden money, PayPal said last night.
The US Internal Revenue Service wants the company to reveal the details of accounts linked to banks or credit cards in 35 countries. A summons issued by US District Court Judge James Ware in San Jose ordered PayPal to hand over records dating back to 1999, when the Internet money-transfer service was launched.

1. Oh fer krissakes .......
This is getting just plain nuts.

What's up? Bombs in Beanie Babies??????

I have an idea ... why not just have the entire country sheath their dwellings in glass and then let's outlaw clothing.

Nude America.

I like that.

4. this is just plain nuts
Their rationale is tracking e-bay auctions to nab IRS cheaters, I guess this is an option,
after all, if I was a survivalist and was now using Jiff peanut butter as a trading commodity,
I would probably show up on e-bay; then again probably not, but many contribute to causes or liberal website like Buzzflash use Paypal, I believe this is more of their data mining.

2. Oh dear! Now the BFEE will know
that I bought a mermaid necklace from Australia and a couple of Nightmare Before Christmas bags from Hong Kong. Oh dear, oh dear!

I'll tell you though; if they think they will find me hiding money overseas, that's just silly! There is very little money left to hide after the taxman cometh so I can make up for those rich folks that so 'richly' deserve their tax cuts! You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip!

5. very suspicious if you ask me
after all mermaids work under water and they're probably under cover as well. Sounds like a fishy tale to me.

9. How about the silver stars anklet from the U.K.?
Does that make me even more a subversive? :hide:

You know, one should never bid on EBay foreign auctions unless one understands the money. I paid twice what I stupidly thought I would on that one. Doh!

Including the money I paid for a Sirius radio on Yahoo but never rec'd. Stars/UK, hmmmn, probably means UK is ready to support Star Wars.

I wonder if they know that the jigsaw puzzle that I bought on e-bay had two missing pieces, name
of puzzle was: Murder in the Wind, oooooooooh.

3. This doesn't surprise me at all! I actually thought they were doing
this with Paypal years ago. Lots and Lots of people sell things on Ebay and get paid through Paypal. Many of them are running a rather profitable business, but not reporting it. I started selling this way 5 years ago, and I reported the little income I get every year. If it really took the IRS this long to check that out, they've really been sleeping on the job!

6. Yes, I can see the income angle
but, I don't want people prying into my financial records on a fishing expedition w/o a search
warrant. Why punish 1000s of innocent people to locate a minority who are violating the law.

that the most secret government in our history is determined to find out everything about everybody and everything except for themselves.
