1. I disagree
that message is most prevalent in so called "high culture" - arts that are generally vilified in this country. Pop culture celebrates alot of crap- its market driven after all.

2. I dont mean to split hairs

But I wouldn't label Neil Young a pop artist, and I think you could say some/most pop culture reflects the message.

But I dont think you could say its the only place. Avant-garde artists of all medium spread the message (artists like Steve Earle , Bonnie Raitt and whole slew of those musical artists out of the mainstream)

Nor in music only, film (sundance film festival), art, etc. And activists groups like Drs without Borders and Habitat for Humanity.Festivals like Burning Man or Bonnaroo, its there

So cheers there is more hope than that.

I've loved Neil young since "After the Gold Rush" Thanks for the post, and apologies for the split hairs :hi:

4. I must concede that
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 01:49 PM by pepperbear
you are right. what I should've said was that the ARTS are the only place where these ideals are prevelent. I gave a lot of weight to stuff artists like bob dylan, the beatles (and members thereof), buffalo springfield, edwin starr...etc. All of these acts had hits with anti-establishment songs.

....rather, the contrast is that in the real world political system, espousing these concepts will serve to get you a one way ticket to Also-ran-ville.

I hate to say it, but the best Dem candidates the REAL rockers, who actually will stand up for these values fall by the wayside, only to be replaced by the "non boat" rockers.

Sad!

on edit, spelling
