Expect some bloody battles; Democrats are getting it together
Davies of the DLCC, which is "not to be confused with the DLC. The DLCC is the committee that oversees the 7382 state legislative campaigns across the country", gave a report to the DNC in NO today-

...You might recall that Governor Dean often points to a handful of state legislative victories for Democrats in 2005 and 2006: New Hampshire, Mississippi, Kentucky, Missouri, and Pennsylvania are just a few.

Davies started by thanking the DNC for its historically strong relationship with the DLCC, and 2006 is no different. He continued by documenting "the best untold story" of the 2004 election cycle. A total of ten state legislative chambers switched moved into the Democratic column in 2004, in red and blue states alike. The Colorado House and Senate, Iowa's Senate moved into a tie, both Montana chambers flipped, New Jersey's Senate was a pick-up in 2003, the North Carolina House switched in 2004, Oregon's Senate, Vermont's House, and Washington's Senate are all chambers currently led by a majority of Democrats. Davies continued that Democrats have won 90% of special elections at the state legislative level over the past two years.

The task of winning state legislative races across the country is quite complicated and takes successive cycles and consistent effort.

.....Michigan is building towards a Democratic majority in 2010. Davies concluded by citing Minnesota, where we were down 30 seats going into 2004 in the House, but have since whittled the margin down to two.

Members of both houses of Congress cut their teeth in state legislatures. This is how we deepen our bench. It's the kind of thing you hope is happening but don't usually know for sure. The 50 State Strategy is paying off and will continue to do so.

Democrats in state offices are learning to do what Dems do best: Govern.
And they are learning how to do something else: WIN.

6. He calls it building a "farm team." Read this great blog.
This is from last year when Dean spoke to Roy Neel's class at Vanderbilt.
http://www.evergreenpolitics.com/ep/2005/07/dean_makes_spea.html

"Later, in describing an appearance Dean made, we get this interchange:

A young man stood up and asked what he could do to help the party, other than give money, which he didn't have. Dean bobbed on his feet, delighted with the question, because it allowed him to show off his best side -- the side that grew a presidential candidacy from a small Vermont operation with seven employees into a national campaign with 600,000 supporters.

"The number one thing you can do is run for office."

"I'm absolutely serious. I am not kidding."

The class grew quiet. Here was Dean as a Johnny Appleseed, sowing civics in the young. While Democrats have conceded parts of the country considered hostile, Republicans have left no office untested, he pointed out. The result is that Dems have no farm system, no ability to find young political talent in red states and groom it.

Run, he urged the students. Run for county road commissioner. Run for city council. "If you don't have people running for offices like county commissioner, who do you think is going to run for Congress a generation from now?"

We are building a farm team.

7. This is Great News!
All I hear from folks all over my state and beyond is that regardless, they'll be out in record numbers voting DEMOCRAT cross-the-board. And, that includes many disgruntled (putting it mildly) Republican voters. Only a few Repubs say they'll sit this one out, make that 1 out of many, many.

Now, that is how fed-up people are w/the G.O.P. & Bush&CO.

8. When you allow nature to set fires in forests the old unproductive
parts are removed and a healthy re-growth will happen.

So even though our country is in the midst of a fire know that it is also getting rid of the old un-needed, deleterious overgrowth. We are gonna rise again baby!

9. The DLCC chairwoman spoke today on C-Span. Great speech.
Very empowering. That is the group which is benefitting so much from the 50 State Strategy.
