"Reagan Republicans" - their new moniker and an answer to it
Every Repug I've heard lately is using this as their new self-description. I realize this is an effort to distance themselves from Bush. To me Reagan is just another Republican who flouted law and fought an illegal war (Iran Contra) and narrowly avoided impeachment. Is this what they mean?

2. Yeah they're not as bad as Bush
They only sell arms to our enemies, support dictators and help them import drugs.

5. They think the people still have fond memories of Reagan.
The sheeple certainly do. People with real, working memories don't. Reagan set the table for the ultimate collapse of the American economic miracle. He started the demise of the working and middle classes and the rise of the corporatocracy. He started the borrow and spend, "deficits don't matter" binge that will eventually bring us down.

On the other hand, he and Nancy were our first Wiccans in The White House.

For most of Reagan's
presidency, his schedule
was co-ordinated by
astrologer Joan Quigley.

Bad Times for Bonzo

Star power is put to use at the White House

The tale of the Reagan astrologer is one of the weirdest scandals ever to rock any White House. On the one hand, it's a silly and amusing comedy of errors; on the other, it's a profoundly disturbing secret abuse of the nation's executive office. It is perhaps the only instance of paranormal forces having an undeniably real impact on the course of U.S. history.

Towards the end of Ronald Reagan's second term, sordid unpleasantries were finally starting to stick to the Teflon President. In May 1988, the crushing liabilities of Iran-Contra, the bloated national debt and Reagan's faltering mental acuity were joined by a new revelation: that for the previous seven years of his administration, the president's every important action had been orchestrated by Nancy Reagan's astrologer, Joan Quigley.

This disclosure stunned the nation, with good reason. It's disturbing enough that a president could be the puppet of an anonymous, unelected individual, hidden away from the American public. Compounding the travesty, the source of this clandestine influence was nothing more substantial than the vicissitudes of Ronnie's horoscope. What a sad and barbaric state of affairs, to have our nation guided for the better part of a decade by the empty divinations of the Zodiac.

Nonetheless, it must be said that the mass media are guilty of blowing this story out of proportion and leaving misconceptions about the Reagan astrologer in the popular consciousness. People have been led to believe that Quigley had a personal say in Oval Office decision making, that she maintained direct contact with the president, and was responsible for developing and implementing policy according to the heavens. As best we can tell, this was never the case.

9. Reagan Republicans...
Just as bigoted, just as class-snobbish, just as reactionary, just as greedy, just as war-mongering, just as self-deceiving as Bush Republicans, maybe just not quite as criminal - or just a little bit better at not getting caught. Please remember I said maybe, and remember I said just a little.

10. And, like bush*, cancelled US funding for all overseas family planning
centers that mention abortion. The Pope and Reagan had a chat, you see.

"The U.S. and the Vatican on Birth Control," by Carl Bernstein
-snip-
In response to concerns of the Vatican, the Reagan Administration agreed to alter its foreign aid program to comply with the church's teachings on birth control. According to William Wilson, the President's first ambassador to the Vatican, the State Department reluctantly agreed to an outright ban on the use of any U.S. aid funds by either countries or international health organizations for the promotion of...abortions. As a result of this position, announced at the World Conference on Population in Mexico City in 1984, the U.S. withdrew funding from, among others, two of the world's largest family planning organizations: the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities.

12. Ah, proud "don't recall" Republicans...
That should be their mantra...

"Did you support Bush's illegal war?"

"I don't recall."

"Did you support his warrantless spying on American citizens?"

"I don't recall."

"Did you support his failed attempts at spin after the Katrina fiasco?"

"I don't recall."

Stamp that one a REPUG and send him on his way.

Nixon as did my brother. After Nixon resigned all of them told me that they never supported Nixon even when I reminded them of some of the horrendous arguments we had about it.

13. The answer to this
is not to challenge Reagan, but to challenge similarities to him. Reagan is remembered as a proponent of small government, and the Repubs should be POUNDED for the growth of government and spending during W's term. Reagan was not particularly fond of the Religious Right, yet Republicans pander to them at every opportunity. The last amnesty of undocumented workers happened in 1986, on Reagan's watch, yet many modern Repubs want to round them up and deport them. You cannot be a "Reagan Republican" and oppose embryonic stem cell research.

Nope, the current batch of Republicans is Nixonian to be sure.

16. I agree that he ushered in the whole "greed is good" concept
I just want to make sure that Dems are comfortable and willing to take exception to this description. A "Reagan" Republican is just as dreadful as a "Bushie".

I know that Republicans take great pride in crediting Reagan with bringing down the Soviet Union. My whole take on that is that they (we) were playing "Suicide Roulette" with them particularly in regards to defense spending. They just ran out of money first and faced their inevitable downfall. Just like we will if these fiscally insane spending policies of the Repubs continue.

17. More members of St Ronnie's administration were found guilty of crimes
than any modern administration.

http://liberalslikechrist.org/about/Reagan.html

Conservative Republicans are such paragons of virtue and truth that they claim that Bill Clinton's administration was "the most corrupt administration in American history" despite the fact that history contradicts everything about that statement.
Despite the fact that the President and first lady, and many members of the Clinton administration were charged with crimes, their accusers fell flat on their faces when they had to prove their trumped up charges in court almost every time, because there was no credible evidence or witnesses to justify the charges brought by their Republican enemies and touted by their countless friends in the mainstream media.
Contrast that to the great numbers of the Republican administration of Ronald Reagan who were not just charged, but were found guilty, but which most Americans don't remember because the so-called "Liberal media" rarely, if ever, make any mention of them. See the actual names & crimes below.
The contenders for the title of "the most corrupt administration in American history" are all Republican administrations. It may be hard to order them exactly, but the contenders for the first, second, third & fourth "most corrupt administrations in American history" are the Republican administrations of Grant, Harding, Nixon and Reagan.

20. Me too. I always remember the movie "Wall Street"
because it was a true reflection of the times. This is the first time that a large group of people rejected the commonly held morality (hard work, fair play) - like Leona Helmsly who said "only the little people pay taxes" amd that junk bond dealer (brain freeze)who went to jail when his actions became too egregious to ignore.

The game is only good for as long as the players agree to uphold the rules. When too many players decide the rules no longer apply to them, the game continues, but only half-heartedly until finally all the participants walk off the field and the game is dead.
