are IDIOTS. They will likely also be the 14% who still approve of Bush after he's been impeached. And they are walking around unsupervised...scary.

will remain high... they'll make it look like it's "made a difference" by lowering the prices just a bit (enough to still allow for windfall profits for the oil companies), for a short time (in time for elections so the RePIGs can hog all the credit). After that whether they stay lower or go back up will depnd on who's in the majority after the elections...

Continue giving the oil men in the WH a majority that will override common sense in favor of big oil profits and prices will go back up as BushCo say they're powerless to help. :puke: Take away the majority from the WH Oil men and we have a better chance of passing ways to help folks with heating prices and putting caps on oil profits... not to mention a chance at having put in place REAL environmentally friendly ways to own cars and heat our homes.

Can hear it now....Bush announces there's no point in the probe after all because the MSNBC poll showed the wish of the people, and focus groups like this really matter to him :argh:

is that * and cronies ratcheted up gas prices as a means to blackmail the American people in to accepting even lower EPA standards on gas emissions then we already have. No amount of spin (and there's alot out there in Blogsland) can or should be allowed to cover this fact up.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is some price-gouging going on, and Bush's attempt to gut clear air laws is ridiculously fishy and opportunisitic.

However, underlying all this is the increasing demand for oil and the unreliability of supply. The US should be awash in competitively-priced alternative fuels these days, since the 1970s oil shocks led to a massive boom in research on such fuels. Nevertheless, Ronald Reagan stupidly canceled most of this research and returned us into the hands of big oil. The GOP was mostly responsible for this though Clinton didn't do as much as he could have in the 1990s. (If only Gore had won in 2000.)

Basically, you reap what you sow. There's no way that we're going to enjoy cheap oil and cheap gas for much longer with the current supply-demand curves. The choice is basic-- either we diversify into renewable fuels quickly and push research into them, or we suffer more at the hands of big oil companies. Bush is definitely guilty of kowtowing to the oil companies so much that he's discouraged much of any meaningful work on alternatives, at least until recently. However, the prices would be high under both Republicans and Democrats. This is a very serious long-term issue here.
