GOP $100 dollar gas "rebate" proposal
WTF? At least when they gave billions to millionaires in tax cuts, he gave me $300(of my money). So now the price of my support for this sorry-ass admin is down to $100(of my money)? WTF?

12. It's another tax rebate for Big Oil!
Only this time, it's $100 X 40,000,000 (or whatever number of drivers or families qualify).

That's quite a chunk of change and all in one lump.

5. No one did; giving everyone a $100 rebate for gas was discussed
today to appease us, like that would do it.

18. That Won't Work
I'm happy that I spend less than $40 a month on gas (for now, anyway). I used to spend $300+ when I had my old job. :nuke:

22. Exactly
Now they can demagogue something til the cows come home. "Democrats don't want you to have $100. They want to give it to a caribou" Or we can just give them their way, which would probably be worse. The 60 day gas tax holiday is equally lame. Why not do something about the problem instead of throwing your pocket change into the street?

10. OK..
We should all vow to use that $100 to defeat the Republicans at the polls.

To whom should I give it?

I'm thinking to the John Edwards campaign.

11. A bandaid. Where's that Bush supporter with the purple heart
bandaid on her chin?
What does she think about that $ 100 rebate?
I hope someone, maybe a monk, has enough guts to buy $ 100 worth of gas, and set them self on fire.
Sometimes, it takes a tragic statement to get people moving.

15. What about people on fixed income and long-term unemployed?
These GOP "proposals" seem to always let the rich stick their snouts into the till and cut out people who don't have enough earned income to file a tax return. The folks hurt the most get raped and the fat cats (including the CEOs!!) still get some shekels that mean little to them.

17. it adds $100 per taxpayer to the deficit
(not to mention the cost of administrating the check) and in effect, goes directly to big oil. government subsidy of oil profits added to the deficit.

no thanks.

and temporary suspension of the federal gas tax? that's fucking retarded, too.

28. I wonder if this $100 will be "paid back" on April 15, 2007?
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the $300 "rebates" of 2001 (which I didn't receive) turn out to be "advances" on the 2002 tax return?

From the Libertarians:

WASHINGTON, DC -- Here's a shocker: The income tax rebate checks now arriving in Americans' mailboxes could mean you'll get a smaller income tax refund than you expected next year -- or that you might actually have to pay $300 or $600 more in taxes.

That's because the check is not a rebate on taxes you paid last year, but an "advance rebate" on the taxes you are paying this year, the Libertarian Party noted today.

So, if you're due a refund when you file your tax forms in early 2002, it will be $300 per person lower than it otherwise would have been. And if you are unlucky enough to owe taxes, your bill could be up to $300 per person higher.

Surprised?

25. They can keep the $100
It might go to better use to start a radical and intensive alternative feul program.

If they want to do something symbolic, they can reinstall the solar panels that Reagan removed from the White House in 1981.

The long range solution is to push CAFE up to 45-50 mpg. And that's only temporary -- see "The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century" by James Howard Kunstler
