Bush Hails a 'Turning Point' in Iraq

By JOHN O'NEIL
Published: May 1, 2006

President Bush today called the formation of a new Iraqi government "a turning point," after hearing from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld about their weekend meeting with that country's prime minister designate.

Mr. Bush cautioned that "there's going to be more tough days ahead," but he said that "it's important for the American people to know that we've got partners in this effort who are dedicated to a unified Iraq."

The president said that Ms. Rice and Mr. Rumsfeld had gone to Baghdad over the weekend "to sit down with these new folks and say, 'You have our support and we want you to succeed.' "

Mr. Bush spoke outside the Oval Office after a briefing that included Ms. Rice and Mr. Rumsfeld and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace.

He said that the cabinet secretaries had reported that the new leaders "were optimistic people, that they're full of energy and they're very eager to succeed."

2. To quote Wes Clark on AAR today
"It must be a pentagon shaped building, they've turned so many corners, and we've been around it twice now.."

6. Turning point? Maybe.
Time will tell, but I'm not particularly optimistic this thing is going to work out all peachy-keen in the end.

13. Mission Accomplished Day? - Mission Accomplished - Nothing..
:kick: May 1 marks three years since George W. Bush staged his "Mission Accomplished" aircraft landing in San Diego Harbor:grr: and "delivered good news to the men and women who fought in the cause of freedom: their mission is complete and major combat operations in Iraq have ended.": Nothing ended. The violence since has not just been sporadic and small scale. The U.S. has been demolishing dozens of entire cities and towns.

As of April 27, at 3:15 p.m. EST - 2,393 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq according to Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.

The count of US wounded is around seven times that number, and Iraqi civilian deaths are officially between 34,000 and 39,000, and actually between 200,000 and 300,000.

The State Department´s annual terrorism report finds that Iraq has become a safe haven for terrorists and has attracted a "foreign fighter pipeline"

Meanwhile, a National Counterterrorism Threat Center report finds that terrorist incidents and deaths more than doubled in 2005.

At 9:00 a.m. ET on Monday May 1, in Room 235 of the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, D.C., Ellen Tenney, from Rockingham Vermont, will present petitions from towns in Vermont calling for the impeachment of President Bush. The towns each passed resolutions to send the petitions. These petitions are the first few of many from towns across the nation that will be arriving at Congress's door. They are presented under the guidelines of Jefferson's Manual section 603, and will be referred to a House Committee, probably the Judiciary, for consideration.

On May 1 in Los Angeles: an Emergency Public Discussion on Iraq and Iran with Former UN Weapons Inspector SCOTT RITTER, 36th Congressional District Candidate MARCY WINOGRAD, Civil Liberties Lawyer and Activist STEPHEN ROHDE.

May 1 Frank Rich column: Downing Street memo 'proved accurate.'

There are a couple things you can do to mark the passing of another year of an unclear and unaccomplished mission.
:kick: PoliticsTV.com is commemorating the May 1 speech by inviting people to create their own Mission Accomplished speech:

16. This administration has had so many turning points...
in Iraq, it is a wonder they don't get dizzy from going round and round in circles. I've lost track as to how many "turning points" we've supposedly turned in Iraq. Their desperation is showing and they are grasping at straws to spin chicken shit into chicken salad. It just won't work any more.

18. Nice compendium
But remember, this is a turning point, not turning a corner. I'm not sure what the hell the difference is, and there probably isn't one, but it's surely one of those bullshit "differences" without a distinction that the Bushistas are so fond of. Like the "we never said Saddam was an imminent threat" or "we never directly linked Saddam and Al Qaeda."

to Dumbya that running around in circles does NOT equate into "turning points".

Stay the course indeed Georgie Boy, stay the course indeed!
