Here's just a tiny sampling. But they're all great. In 10 minutes of reading I didn't see a single negative post.

As a professor of English and Cultural studies, I want to argue that despite the attempts to spin it, Stephen’s performance went way beyond merely good comedy or even a good satiric jab at the powerful. It may be one of those moments when we look back at the downfall of the Bush presidency in the minds of most Americans. At the very least, it’s symbolic of the new vocal opposition of cultural figures (Springsteen, Neil Young, even Burt Bachrach) to this administration. Popular comedy has not risen to this level of social criticism, probably, since the the 1970s. Colbert’s skewering of the ideological underpinnings of the Bush administration should stand alongside the work of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

Steven:
You may have caused us to reach the tipping point; the “at long last, sir, have you no decency” moment from McCarthy fame. A “the emperor has no clothes” moment.
Well done. When can we start breathing again?

Wonderful, beautiful, courageous, genius, brilliant, celebratory, trend setting, amazing, can’t say enough. By far Stephen Colbert is the biggest patriot of all time! We love you Stephen Colbert!!!!!! Satire plays better to a universal audience better than just straight facts.

Dear Mr. Colbert, I was literally gasping for air, I was laughing so hard at your comments. I’m a huge fan of your show, but this was definitely your crowning jewel. And the look on Bush’s face whenever they cut to him, was priceless. He looked like he’d just sucked on a lemon. I’m sorry the impersonator is getting all the press, he was very good, but he didn’t take my breath away and cause me to jab my fist into the air and say, “YESSSSSS!”, like you did. Sincerely, Susan M. Kansas City, MO

I’ve watched your show from the first Colbert Report. You had been my favorite correspondent on the Daily Show but I thought the new show might wear thin being just you. The Colbert Report started out good and has become phenomenal, really just delightful. Your routine at the correspondents dinner contained many bits I’d heard you do before on your show. The routine was extremely well crafted and delivered with amazing timing, as always. What struck me with this performance was the absolute zeal with which you went after Mr Bush and the press. You never do step out of character. However, I believe I glimpsed in this performance that you have a heartfelt disgust for the man who is our President (i.e., you are more than just a talented person doing a job, you have morals and a conscience). Well done! # 16524 Darren Heydanek Says: May 1st, 2006 at 9:36 pm
That was the best thing I think I’ve ever watched. I only wish they had more reaction shots of W. and the Missus. Just priceless. Thanks for bashing them over the head with truthiness Stephen.
You are a brave and good man. Many Thanks!!!
