New book calls Ray Nagin a coward
Edited on Thu May-04-06 09:30 AM by killerbush
A new book coming out by historian Douglas Brinkley, calls current New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin a "clueless, collapsing coward", and doubt very seriously that Nagin cared about the plight of his city after Hurricane Katrina hit. Nagin called the allegations a "political hit", and wondered aloud if Brinkley was trying to influence the second round of voting coming up for New Orleans mayor.
I agree with Nagin on this one. all this is, is an attempt by Brinkley to undermine Nagin's run for mayor. I wonder if Brinkley calls Bush and FEMA cowards for their utter incompetence after the storm as well??

1. Would you be equally offended if he said the same about Bush?

Brinkley is a New Orleans native and a reputable historian. If he is reporting facts I have no problem with it. If it is totally made up then I do. I doubt however if Brinkely is giving many people glowing praise.

2. Brinkley may also have access to facts that you are not. He's not a liar
or a political hitman, so I'd be careful with accusations about Brinkley unless you are certain about your own facts.

5. BLM I didn't say he was a political hitman
Nagin did. Those were his words, not mine. Read the post again before making accusations about me

7. You said you agreed with Nagin on this in your post.

I took that at face value. Read your own post again and the part I replied to, if you didn't write it, then someone editted it into your post.

9. I agreed with Nagin on the timing of the book, but
He said it was a political hit

10. YOU: all this is, is an attempt by Brinkley to undermine Nagin's run for
mayor.

That's what a political hitman does and you agreed with Nagin it ws timed for that.

You came to that determination - I'm just saying that Brinkley has no record of doing that, and is a historian noted for his honest observations.

That's all.

3. Nagin picked up the endorsement of the republican
who got the most votes in the mayoral election but didn't make the runoff. If I were a NOLA resident that's all I would need to know. Doug Brinkley is a good historian.

4. Douglas Brinkley is a well-respected scholar, and a long-time
resident of Louisiana. I would imagine he's pretty disgusted by what he's witnessed this past year and has every right to say so.
Nagin (along with MANY others, certainly) totally dropped the ball during Katrina.
Chocolate City,indeed...

8. Brinkley started talking about it within a month of the hurricane
They have had the release date on Amazon since last Oct. They moved the release date back one month otherwise it is on schedule. I think they moved the release back a month because the number of page numbers in it almost doubled from the original estimate. Frankly, I don't think a book over 700 pages is written as a hit job on just one mayor. Although Brinkley has plenty of negatives to say about the administration and FEMA as well. Like Colbert he may just call it like he sees it.
