Let Us Not Forget. 36 Years Ago Today...
America was stunned on May 4, 1970
When rally turned to riot up at Kent State University
They said the students scared the Guard
Though the troops were battle dressed
Four martyrs earned a new degree
The Bachelor of Bullets...

Beach Boys
'Student Demonstration Time'

In case you forgot.
This shit happened then and it can happen again.
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, were finally on our own...

Because it's what happens when crazy republicans rule the roost.
And this giggling murder monkey is the bat-shit craziest of all.
He ain't at 32% in the polls for nothing.

Today we don't shoot protesters, we just put them in "freedom zones".
See that's my problem.
I live in AMERICA.
The whole freaking country is a freedom zone.
Or did I miss a memo somewhere?

1. So many have no knowledge of that event
Or it's horror. The NG, kids themselves, riled by fear, shot innocent kids for no reason. W is promulgating the same fear level in our country now.

5. When you talk about the Beach Boys
you're not talking about a monolith. Mike Love is a repig and I wouldn't doubt the same about Bruce Johnston, but Brian Wilson, who was the architect for the group's sound, its resident genius and one of the great musical minds of the ages, is a progressive who in no way supports Bush.

The late Dennis Wilson would have kicked anybody's ass who lumped him in with Bush, and the late Carl Wilson was cut from too fine a cloth. Neither of these men were alive to see the rise of the Beast. I have no idea about Alan Jardine, but he doesn't seem like a repig to me.

And "Student Demonstration Time" is a great song, damn it.

I know we're all fed up with useless wars and racial strife
but next time there's a riot, well, you'd best stay out of sight
when there's a riot goin' on
When there's a riot goin'
when there's a riot goin' on
it's student demonstration time.

9. The group played for Bush in 2000 and 2004
In 2000 they sang "I'm picking up Bush Vibrations."

No, I don't think Brian had anything to do with it. But Love was there as was Jardine.

4. 4 dead in Ohio
Edited on Thu May-04-06 11:57 PM by DesertRat
"On May 4, 1970, a student demonstration at Kent State, Ohio left four students dead, one paralyzed, and eight others wounded. This demonstration, meant to be one of many peaceful demonstrations against the war, was ended abruptly and violently when the National Guard fired into the crowd for 13 seconds. The brief shootings ended the lives of students Jeffrey Miller, Allison Krause, William Schroeder, and Sandra Scheuer. The distances ranged from 270 feet to 390 feet. Some of these students were not even directly involved. Justified or not by self-defense, the "massacre" sparked a nationwide student strike that closed many colleges and universities.

Immediately after the Kent State shooting (sometimes referred to as the "Kent State Massacre") on May 4, 1970, Neil Young composed the song "Ohio" after looking at photos appearing in Life magazine and then taking a walk in the woods. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young went to the studio and recorded the song which was released to radio stations shortly after the killings. Soon, the lyrics "Four dead in Ohio" became an anthem to a generation. In some parts of the country, the song was banned from playlists because of it's "anti-war" and "anti-Nixon" sentiments."

"Ohio" by Neil Young
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?"

6. Thank you for posting this
For years, I've told my students about May 4 and used this song as a reference to explain Kent State. Too often, the kids--college kids--didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

Always glad to run into a Beach Boys fan. I've loved them like no other band for the past 30 years. Jesus, I must be getting old....

7. In memory of "The Boy From Diamond Drive" ....
Edited on Fri May-05-06 12:41 AM by NVMojo
Jeffrey Glenn Miller, 20, of 22 Diamond Drive, Plainsview, L.I died at Kent State thirty five thirty six years ago May 4, 1970. He was killed by a single bullet to the mouth, a bullet shot from the gun of an Ohio State National Guard soldier. That bullet killed a boy and his hopes, but brought a nation to life, to remember what hope is. Hope must survive rage. I remember now the boy from Diamond Drive.

Just off Manetto Hill Road, Diamond Drive runs right alongside the Northern State Parkway and in sight of the Long Island Expressway. Jeffrey Miller, a graduate of a Plainview high school never came back to his Diamond Drive.

Jeffrey lived down the block from the Schiffmans, around the corner from the Brickmans and the Schettinis. He looked west for his chance to see Manhattan, the place of Long Island dreams, just a road away. When he woke up on the morning of May 4, 1970 at Kent State he could not have known he would end up on a far different road. I remember now the boy who never grows old. I remember now the boy from Diamond Drive.
