Don't get me wrong... I appreciate Pink and Neil Young....
But honestly, when the guys poll numbers are tanking, how hard is it to make a stand against him....

I mean, The Dixie Chicks stood up when no one else would....

Bright Eyes went after Bush on Jay Leno when the Bush numbers were in the 60's...

Springsteen and REM went after him when he was still very popular...

But still, it's a little late now doncha think....

a trillion in debt....

2500 dead Americans....

Thousands of dead Iraqis....

Thousands of American soldiers mamed....

I'm just sayin'....

It's just there is a hint of capitalizing on his sinking poll numbers....

Pink has made a career of chasing trends....

11. That's patently ridiculous.
She released "Stupid Girls" as the first single, and off of the strength of that, her CD became a big seller on CD long before anyone heard "Dear Mr. President."

Once again, someone on DU has to attack and/or question the motives of ANYONE who takes a stand. While we sit here typing on our computers. I'm sick of it.

19. You know what....
I work in politics...

I've been on the front lines since Jimmy Carter ran in 1976...

Beside being an American with the right of Free Speech....

I have earned my right to criticize and question the motives of anyone I care too...

I tap tap tap on here for relief...

BTW, the CD was released after he tanked....

I don't give a rats ass about what the first single was...

Tap tap tap all you like. If you come here for relief, you won't get any from me if you insist on questioning the motives of anyone who speaks out.

I thank you for your public service, but you act as if we've already won. We haven't. Now is not the time to throw baseless accusations out about people who are getting the message out, when the MSM still is not.

58. *snarf*. Yuh, Neil really needs the money -

Ohio
lyrics by Neil Young

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

I'm just sayin'...

61. You're right
I'm not as knowledgeable about Pink, but I was disappointed with Neil Young speaking up so late in the game. I'm glad he's spoken up and is bringing attention, but, as you say, Springsteen, Dixie Chicks, John Mellencamp and others did so when it was very risky.

But, a little late is still better than not at all.

When Dennis Miller turns back into a liberal, then we'll know that Smirk has finally jumped the shark.

So what ARE you saying?
One of Neil Young's new songs is Let's Impeach the President. That sounds like a damn fine idea to me. What's wrong with that sentiment?

And once he's impeached and thrown out of office, P!nk can kick his ass.

Provided Skittles doesn't beat her to it, that is.

17. Remember the televised anti-war protests at the 2003 Grammys?
If not, don't feel bad - there weren't any.

When Avril Lavigne flashed an anti-war T-shirt at the audience, the camera cut away from the frontal shot. On orders from the White House, I'll wager.

When Sheryl Crow performed, her guitar strap bore the message NO WAR. She was ordered to let her hair cover the strap.

Before we invaded Iraq, artists in America were intimidated into silence. Now some of them are finding their voices again.

They are certainly doing the right thing....

But it smacks a little of what Thomas Paine called the Sunshine Patriot....

An act of defiance when all else are with you is hardly an act of great courage...

An act of defiance in the teeth of popular opinion is an heroic stance...

23. "Who is big enough to do this?"
Good question and probably deserving of its own thread.

Clint Eastwood? A more vocal Paul Newman (I know he is a liberal)? It does seem like we, as a society, are subdivided in such a way as to make finding any ONE celebrity to speak out to all of us nearly impossible.

I think we need a few freeper celebrities to leave the dark side. Arrrnold and Mel G. to name two.

39. I understand what you're saying, but we need all the voices we can get.
Culture being what it is, it's my opinion that any pop celebrity who decides to throw their weight behind anti-war, anti-Bush efforts deserves our support and gratitude that they're using what market power they have to sell the truth to the remaining 32% that have their fingers jammed in their ears.

I'm not going to buy the Pink CD, or any other. Music is a luxury we can't often afford right now. I can, however, appreciate her efforts and hope that maybe some people who listen to her might be persuaded to change what they think or believe. Likewise for Springsteen, Neil Young, etc.

IMO. We are the true majority of America, and everyone should be welcome - we have to work hard at letting go of our resentments and our pride at being right. We have to abandon the I-told-you-so attitudes. We MUST WELCOME CONVERTS with open arms, and put our resentments behind us.

Same thing with people who voted for Bush and now regret it. I have seen them refered to very negatively on DU at times. IMO, anyone who is against the regime is welcome, no matter when they realized. Every last person who "gets it" makes a difference.

Save the planet for another day

Attention shoppers.

Buy with a conscience and save.

Save the planet for another day

Save Alaska!

Let the caribou stay.

Don't care what the governments say

They're all bought

and paid for anyway.

Save the planet for another day

Hey Big Oil!

What do you say?

We were runnin' through the night

Never knowin' if we would see the light

Paranoid schizophrenic visions

Livin in fear of the wrong decisions

We got to wake up

We got to keep goin'

If they follow us

There's no way of knowin'

We got a job to do

We got to save Mother Earth

Be the ocean when it meets the sky

You can make a difference.

If you really try.

Be the magic in the Northern lights

Six Days...

Six nights.

Be the river as it rolls along

It has three-eyed fish.

And it's smellin' strong.

Be the rain you remember fallin'

Be the rain.

Be the rain.

Yeah, rain was fallin' and we're soakin' wet

Hail is beatin' down on our heads

The wind is blowin' through our hair

Faces frozen in the frigid air

We got to get there

Alaska

We got to be there

Before the big machines

We got a job to do

We got to save Mother Earth

Dream the hunter on the western plain

The birds are all gone.

Where did they go?

Dream the fisherman in his boat

He's comin' home empty.

He's barely afloat.

Dream the logger in the great northwest

They're runnin' out of trees.

They got to give it a rest.

(There's no other way to cut it)

Dream the farmer in the old heartland

Corporate greed and chemicals

are killin' the land.

Next mornin' Sun was up at dawn

She looked around and Earth was gone

Dark visions he had last night

He needed peace, he needed light.

He heard the rumble and

He saw the big machines

The green army rose

It was a bad dream

He had a job to do

He had to save Mother Earth

Be the ocean when it meets the sky

Greek freighters are dumping

crap somewhere right now.

Be the magic in the northern lights

(The ice is melting!)

Be the river as it rolls along

Toxic waste dumpin'

from corporate farms.

Be the rain you remember fallin'

Be the rain.

Be the rain.

Save the Planet for another day

Be the rain.

Be the rain.

Be the river as it rolls along

Be the rain.

Be the rain.

Be the rain, be the rain

The music and lyrics, if they're good, can't be forced. They come when they come. This is the moment in time when Young and Pink were able to do this, not before.

always been outspoken and has always gone against the grain.....

Pink reaches a very broad audience in the 18-30 year old demographic...I am a bit older...I think she kicks ass....this is her lively hood and it takes guts to put a song out like she did...

Anyhoo....we need to take what we can get and run with it...this is not the time to criticize anyone taking a stand....lets hope we get more visible people like Pink coming out of the woodwork....

And remember just because we don't hear from people doesn't mean that they don't despise the * cabal like we do...Everyone has their own time and place to take their stand.....

65. "Dear Mr. President" is a powerful song
Very well written. Just my two cents.

"You don't know nothin' about hard work!"

66. I saw the video of Pink doing that song live
and it really comes from her heart. I love the part about hard work
and the part about whiskey and cocaine. I think Katrina tore it for
a lot of people. The sight of fellow Americans rotting in an American
street was too horrible to contemplate.

63. I kind of feel that way about politicians.
How hard is it to stand up to him in Congress when his poll numbers are tanking?

I appreciate those Congress people who did so beginning in 2000, whether it was politically expedient or not.

As far as the musicians go? I don't know about PINK. I haven't heard it/them/he/she. I appreciated Paula Cole's "My Hero, Mr. President," and some others. Young's "Greendale" a few years ago was a more subtle commentary about the national climate, for those paying attention.

64. Maybe, but these artists types and timing are probably not
as planned out as that - the song comes together when it comes together.

68. so when John Lennon wrote Give Peace a Chance...
was he just another Johnny-come-lately? After all, that song wasn't released until 1969 -- well after other artists had recorded songs protesting the Vietnam war. Personally, I don't think Lennon was just cashing in, just as I don't think artists who are now releasing antiwar songs are just cashing in. Interestingly, there's an interview with Lennon from 1964 in which he was asked if the Beatles were planning on recording any anti-war songs and John responded that "all our songs are antiwar"

67. Who's to say Young & Pink didn't write the songs earlier...
I personally have been writing anti-Repug songs since the '80's. I say it's great that we are finally getting the protest song back into the mainstream...that's one way to fuel the eventual huge marches in the streets that we will have to participate in...
