Harold Ford, Jr. on Imus today
Said Patrick Kennedy is a nice guy who has had addiction challenges in the past.

General Hayden is too close to the military to be the CIA chief. Also thinks he is too partisan.

Called for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Said Bush should bring Colin Powell back as SecDef.

Second choice for SecDef would be (Greg?) Smith, a CEO living in Tennessee.

Says a lot of republicans in Tennessee will vote for him.

1. Fred Smith who started (and still runs) Fed-ex
Smith is Republican, but was a good friend of John Kerry's in college. They flew planes together.

5. No, all I ever needed to know about Powell's true character
was revealed early-on for me personally: It's called the My Lai Massacre cover up ... assisted by none other that that "good soldier" Major Powell. :puke:

I did NOT believe the contents of Powell's UN speech for he "kissed superior's asses" like he has done his entire military career.

There are excellent Generals and Retired Generals who are not afraid to speak the truth "unvarnished" as they see it. But IMO, Powell was never one to step outside of "the team" ... loyalty always trumped demonstrated integrity and devotion to Our Constitution.

In Tour of Duty, I found the following things. Obviously, this is very poor way to get info on him - he does sound like an interesting guy. The skill needed to come up with the ideas behind Federal express and implement them sound impressive. AND HE KNEW ELVIS

- He founded Federal Express
- He was the son of a wealthy father who was the founder of the Toddle House franchise.
- He went to Yale
- He knew Elvis Presley, who lived a few blocks from his parents and he flew Elvis in his plane after he (Smith) got out of the Military
- He and Kerry spent a lot of time in their senior year cutting classes to fly airplanes.
Smith resurrected the Yale flying club and Kerry was one of his first recruits.
- He was one of the many people Kerry corresponded with when they were in Vietnam and they were still friends in the 1971 period.
- He was a groomsman at Kerry's first wedding.

So, I would say that the fact that he founded Federal Express is what's important. That he and Kerry were good friends at Yale is interesting only in that it likely meant he wasn't a rigid RW ideologue like Rumsfeld. (That he was in Kerry's 1971 circle of friends is significant)

7. He needs to get out into the working class communities more
often, then, IMO, address the issues that genuinely affect his electorate.

After all, he was sent to Represent his district above all else. ;)

8. Gee, I guess this just isn't good enough for you
Pay-as-you-go expired in 2002. Since then, we have done worse as a nation by nearly every economic measure:
• Government has grown to its largest levels in history, and our federal deficit has totaled more than $1.6 trillion. This year alone, we will run a record deficit of $423 billion.

• The federal government has borrowed more than $1 trillion from foreign governments and has grown the national debt to $9 trillion with the signing of the debt ceiling increase bill by President Bush earlier this week.

• In the eight years before 2000, the U.S. economy added 22.7 million new jobs, or 237,000 jobs a month. Since 2000, job growth has slowed to a total of only 2.3 million jobs, or 38,000 a month.

• From 1992 to 2000, the number of unemployed people fell by 3.3 million. Since 2000, the number of unemployed Americans has grown by 1.2 million.

• Since 2000, the number of Americans living in poverty has grown by 5.4 million, and the poverty rate has increased 12 percent. In the previous eight years, the number of people in poverty declined by 6.4 million, and the poverty rate fell 25 percent.

• The number of Americans without health insurance has increased by 1.5 million every year since 2000, compared to 145,000 each year between 1992 and 2000. Today, 45 million Americans and 778,000 Tennesseans are without health coverage.

• Since 2000, private college tuition has risen 18 percent to more than $21,000, and public college tuition has increased 40 percent to more than $5,400.

• Working Tennesseans now pay more in taxes as a share of their income than many millionaires.

9. OK, points taken
Guess that his IMO smarmy attempt to run against Nancy Pelosi for Minority Leader has given me a very poor impression of him. Yes, perhaps his actions are thoughtful for his electorate. Still, by his behavior taking on Pelosi ... well I'd never turn my back on him because he's going to move up the ladder, one way or another. ;)

16. That's not a plan.
You posted this in another thread. OK, so Ford posted some statistics on his website. What's he going to do about it? He hasn't come up with much.

17. I heard him on Imus and I thought he was EXCELLENT!

I sure do want him to get a Senate seat and he is really ambitious!

The only thing that I did not agree with was the Colin Powell back in idea.

But I didn't worry about it cause it ain't going to happen and FORD knows it ain't going to happen.

That will get him some votes with the POWELL Is WONDERFUL mind set Republicans and if he can pull those votes to our side, so be it.

My new idea is " By Any Means Necessary" to stop the RepubliCONS from owning our government for years to come.
