"If you have nothing to hide" - how to screw up a Freepers world
My fundie, backwash uncle just couldn't see why NSA tracking was a bad thing, it would only keep us safe from them and "if you don't have anything to hide...."

I finally got sick of talking, walked over to his telephone, picked it up and called my brother

"hey, it's me. Over here at Uncle Jim's. He still doesn't see anything wrong with NSA spying, so I thought I'd use his phone to mention Al-queda, Saddam, Osama bin Laden, Michael Moore was right all along, how poorly Bush is doing running this country and how much better off we would have been if Kerry had won

Then I turned around, smiled sweetly to my uncle (with his panic stricken face) and said, "now you can worry about being spied on like the rest of us - if you weren't in the computer before, you are now. And if you fly anywhere, get to the airport early, you're now on the Terror Watch List and might be delayed from boarding your plane"

Maybe now he gets it.

else some loose-lipped NSA stooge toss a monkey-wrench into my well-laid plans for roll-out of a new product.

So yes, there are many, many legitimate, legal dealings about which I require absolute secrecy. And no, I wouldn't want my Grandmother to know everything I'm doing with my business until the proper moment, so why would I not object to the government intruding in my affairs. I've a lot of money invested in development, and potentially a lot more money riding on the outcome, so secrecy is paramount. Why can't people understand that simple concept?

Great example of logic used to illustrate how people never seem to care about civil rights unless it is their civil rights that are being compromised. I wonder how many of these people would let me tap into their personal PC index.dat file, export the findings and show the results to members of their church congregation since they never have anything to hide.

You might also have told your uncle that while he didn't think he had anything to worry about as long as the Bush administration, with which he's very sympatico, is in office, how might he and his phone calls be viewed by a less friendly administration?

Or, what if he used the same pizza delivery joint that the terrorists in his town used? Or the same dry cleaners? Or the same . . . Well, even Uncle Backwash should get it by now.

As far as I'm concerned, anybody who tries to make excuses for this POS administration is guilty of treason--they're supporting the overthrow of our Constitution.

Great way to show your uncle how easy it could be to get on "the list". But how does he know he has nothing to hide? Nobody knows what will be done with that info, where it's stored, how it's kept secure. Suppose someone decides to hack into his file and plant something bu$hco considers "incriminating"?

And how many Germans living in the early 20th century could have imagined that being Jewish, liberal and/or a member of the opposition party was something to hide?

25. Another DUer tried something even more evil
He did an Internet profile of some freeper and posted public information in Free Republic. He got stuff like the guy's hometown, how long he's been living there, how much he paid for his house, the types of cars he has, where he works, all kinds of stuff that is freely available to anyone who wants it.

The guy was royally pissed. But if you and I can get that much, think how much the NSA can get?


Your story is awesome! People don't get it until it affects them personally. We have to open their eyes one freeptard at a time. Democrats win when people think. We need more thinkers.

More Freepers need to be exposed to cute little stories that drive home how they are no less likely to be targeted than the next guy.

Oh, and did you remind him that a Democrat will be President again someday?

Maybe I'll try it on my brother, he's conservative but being a Seventh Day Adventist, he's not a fan of the Christian right. Still, sometimes he'll say something that irks me like "if they're (people accused of crimes like serial murder) guilty, why do we need to spend so much time on their trials." Or "if they don't have anything to hide, they don't have anything to worry about."
