Trivia Time! How many years did it take to get women the right to vote?
I ask because on another thread some people were complaining about the years it has taken to get full rights for gays.

Well women took how long exactly to get voting rights? How about that whole slavery issue? THAT took a war.

Nothing happens overnight, especially in this country.

1. Women still don't have equal rights
and most African Americans don't have equal opportunity.

Which is not to say that we should wait patiently for "our turn" for civil rights. But, yes, change takes time.

5. Getting angry at someone who actually makes an effort but
said something stupid is not very productive.

9. No, my original point was that people who happen to be annoyed
at Dean for his being stupid about gay marriage and saying "oh it is taking so long" need to put this on context.

Social justice takes forever to get done and tearing into our side is not very productive.

2. Almost all of them?
Women got the right to vote through Congress on June 4, 1919.
It was ratified by a majority of the states on August 18, 1920.

Recorded history basically starts about 5000 years before that. (England gave married women over 30 the right to vote shortly before, but not universal suffrage. France had recognized the rights of women under the Revolutionary government, but Napoleon got rid of that right quick. Russia gave women the right to vote for the Communist Party in 1917.)

In the US, the first attempt to get women's suffrage was in 1848. So if that's the standard you want to use, it took 71-72 years to go from first proposal to full Constitutional amendment.

The difference between then and now is the difference in communications. It doesn't take a week and a half for news of a major event to reach the other side of the country. It just takes an active journalism corps, a blog, a text message or email.

6. Still takes more then five minutes to effect change at the state level.
Even the gas prices cannot be changed overnight from high to low because people complain.

3. Hmmm

It took 72 years from 7/4/ 1776 for the Women's Suffragette Movement to begin and another 72 years from that point for women to secure the vote.

Cheers
