OK So They Are Data Mining All Of The Americans' Phone Calls....
They are saying it is simply collecting 'call data records' and not collecting phone customers' names, addresses and other personal information. Let's give them that.

Now

Let's say they start seeing suspicious phone call patterns - as they are saying that they are looking for. What do they do then?

Do they go to the FISA court and get appproval to tap into those calls - or - do they just tap into them?

It's one thing to gather the data - it's another thing as to what they are doing with the gathered data. Has anybody asked this question?

Also - last night or early this a.m. I questioned the fact that according to USA Today "The sources said the NSA made it clear that it was willing to pay for the cooperation of the telcos. I'll ask the following again:

Has anyone questioned the amount of the payment? Where the money was coming from? How it is being reflected in the telephone company's financial statements? Is this legal - paying for customer records? Is it legal for the telcos to receive payment for this data?

Seem's to me that this is taxpayer's money being used to spy on taxpayers. What I don't get is that the telephone company executives that made the decision to cooperate with the NSA are being data mined as well. Why would they agree to that?

2. Even with just numbers
Edited on Fri May-12-06 09:35 AM by C_U_L8R
it takes two seconds to do a reverse lookup on any phone number.

And even with just call data.... wouldn't it be interesting to know
that KKarl spoke to a sexual therapist for two hours on Wednesday,
or that Bush has been having daily calls with a criminal attorney ???

Not to mention.. they KNOW who outted Valerie Plame based
on these call records. If they got the info... why aren't they forthcoming with it ???
hmmmmmmmmmm ????

4. It's not just call data records: some telcos let the NSA tap into fiber
An information security expert, Bruce Schneier, talks about observations leading to this probability.

AT&T Assisting NSA Surveillance

Interesting details emerging from EFF's lawsuit

According to a statement released by Klein's attorney, an NSA agent showed up at the San Francisco switching center in 2002 to interview a management-level technician for a special job. In January 2003, Klein observed a new room being built adjacent to the room housing AT&T's #4ESS switching equipment, which is responsible for routing long distance and international calls.

"I learned that the person whom the NSA interviewed for the secret job was the person working to install equipment in this room," Klein wrote. "The regular technician work force was not allowed in the room." Klein's job eventually included connecting internet circuits to a splitting cabinet that led to the secret room. During the course of that work, he learned from a co-worker that similar cabinets were being installed in other cities, including Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego.

"While doing my job, I learned that fiber optic cables from the secret room were tapping into the Worldnet (AT&T's internet service) circuits by splitting off a portion of the light signal," Klein wrote. The split circuits included traffic from peering links connecting to other internet backbone providers, meaning that AT&T was also diverting traffic routed from its network to or from other domestic and international providers, according to Klein's statement.

The secret room also included data-mining equipment called a Narus STA 6400, "known to be used particularly by government intelligence agencies because of its ability to sift through large amounts of data looking for preprogrammed targets," according to Klein's statement.

5. Google your phone number (land line) and just see what info comes
up about you. And that's just public record stuff - the gov't can also run your phone number through their databases - IRS has it, SS has it, Medicare/Medicaid have it, who only knows else.

7. You can't find potential terrorists and who they may be calling...
without knowing the names.

This "it's only numbers" nonsense is clearly bogus and should be disregarded immediately. Enough with this "let's give them that" crap.
