Rep. John Conyers calls for investigating into GOP phone jamming
The senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee asked the attorney general Friday to appoint a special counsel to investigate the jamming of get-out-the-vote phone lines in New Hampshire in 2002.

In a letter to U.S. Attorney Alberto Gonzales, U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan said an independent counsel is necessary to investigate whether any White House officials were involved in the scheme. Though several players have been prosecuted, more must be done, he said.

"The Department appears not to be reviewing the extensive contacts between the plotters of the phone jamming and high-level Republican officials," Conyers wrote.

Repeated hang-up calls jammed phone lines set up by the state Democratic Party on Election Day 2002, when Republican John Sununu won a hotly contested U.S. Senate race against Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. The plot led to four criminal prosecutions, a civil lawsuit and a recent flurry of political attacks.
