Any opinions on Nancy Pelosi as President of the United State?
Edited on Sun May-14-06 01:10 AM by Kablooie
If Dems win the house she becomes Speaker of the House.

Then if Bush and Cheney are impeached ....

Third in succession is ... Speaker of the House.

Whatcha think?
Hillary may be trying for the number 2 spot in history.

San Fran Sis Ko here we come!

2. Pelosi certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but she passes...
...my overriding primary litmus test-- she voted against the IWR. I'll NEVER support HRC because of her support for war crimes, but I'd be happy to give Pelosi a chance to prove herself. Not my first choice, but I'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

3. After seeing her on MTP last week...
I'll pass.

It was quite painful to watch, I haven't cringed so much in so long.

I know her heart is in the right place and she's on the right side of so many important issues, but she is not the best communicator or spokesperson.

8. Agreed
Generally, I've soft of liked Pelosi, but last weekend was just painful to watch...

Actually, what I'd love to see is the House Democratic Caucus change leadership following a November retaking of the House and Senate... I'm thinking "Democratic Leader Conyers" sounds really nice. Followed, later, of course, by "President Conyers".

21. Pretty much agree
It was pretty awful. My son, who is 29 and fairly political since he works in a political environment said he was about ready to put his foot through the TV.

We need to do a whole lot better.

15. Here, Here. No to a Pelosi presidency.
I can't even say that I want her as a Speaker of the House when the Dems take it back.
Too many times she has stopped short of the full measure needed to do the right thing.

14. You are confusing order of succession with the effect of impeachment
This is about the 50th time someone has suggested this, and it is simply wrong. That's not how impeachment or the 25th Amendment work.

Think of what happened to Nixon and Agnew. Agnew was forced to resign. That created a vacancy in the VP office. Under the 25th amendment, the president appoints a replacement with the consent of Congress. (Last time it was the popular, bipartisan, squeaky clean Ford.) Then the president is impeached or forced to resign, and the congressionally approved VP becomes president.

The order of succession is only intended to operate in case of near simultaneous death of the president and VP. In other words, there is no chance that the Speaker will become president as a result of impeachment.

18. A question, HamdenRice. If Cheney were to suffer a debilitating
illness and could not perform his office, and so resigned it, and the Congress voted on articles of impeachment to convict Bush before the Senate could confirm Cheney's replacement, would not the Speaker become president?

19. Yes
If Cheney were removed, resigned or died in office and Bush were impeached before he could appoint a VP, then the Speaker would become president.

But remember, impeachment is a political process that is managed by the congressional leadership. I doubt they would allow impeachment to proceed at a pace that would heap a another constitutional crisis on top of what would already be several existing political crises.

Even if the Democrats were the majority party (as they were during the Nixon Watergate crisis), they would not want to cause a switch in party control of the presidency, because of fear of being accused of having completed a constitutional coup. As during Watergate, the leadership would prefer a consensus politician from the party already in control of the presidency.

Now an interesting parlor game is guessing what "clean" republican a Democratic leadership would insist on as the replacement for Cheney. Because of the consent requirement, Congress can basically dictate the VP's replacement because they have an iron clad veto over the president's choice.

My guess is that Bush will be forced to appoint McCain as VP, or even possibly Powell, with everyone realizing that they were really choosing the next president.

and insight also.

Nixon chose Ford (or did Congressional leaders put Ford's name in play?). Bush, if he were to lose Cheney, would have some questionable choices for a replacement, wouldn't he?

He might be tempted to go with Rob Portman. The GOP is in danger of losing Ohio for the first time in over a decade, and Portman might be their lone chance of preserving majorities there.

22. Sorry, you're wrong
they could both be impeached one after the other. Cheney first (the easy one, he's probably going to get indicted) and DON'T confirm the shrub's nomination for veep.

It IS possible.

It's highly unlikely unless the dems could take 67 Senate seats though. That's what it takes to convict anyone.
