New England State of Emergency. Where's the strummin' Cakesucker-in-Chief?

New England Flooding Forces Evacuations
Sunday, May 14, 2006

CONCORD, N.H. — Torrential rain forced hundreds of people from their homes in parts of New England on Sunday, as water flowed over dams and washed out roads.

The governors of New Hampshire and Massachusetts declared states of emergency, activating the National Guard to help communities respond to the storm. Maine's governor also declared a state of emergency for one county.

"It's a very serious situation," said New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, adding that forecasters were predicting 12 to 15 inches of rain by the end of the storm in parts of southern New Hampshire. "It continues to change and the situation continues to worsen."

A dam in Milton, N.H., was in danger of failing, which could send a 10-foot wall of water downstream, the National Weather Service said in a bulletin. People downstream were being evacuated in the town. The state Office of Emergency Management said at least a dozen dams were being closely watched.

4. But they have to go to the border so Bush can get a neocon poll bounce.
It just keeps getting deeper, and deeper, and deeper.

11. I hear the flooding is bad in the NE part of Mass...

Yesterday's deluge left its mark. Above, rainwater cascaded over
a stone wall on Route 1 in Topsfield.

Rain Continues As Gov. Declares State Of Emergency
More Wet Weather Expected Through Week
UPDATED: 6:06 pm EDT May 14, 2006

Guardsmen were called to Peabody, where some streets were flooded.
The National Guard said approximately 100 soldiers from the 1058th
Transportation Company out of Hingham, 1164th Transportation Company
out of Leominster, 1166th Transportation Company out of Worcester
and the 972nd Military Police Company out of Reading were placed
on state active duty in response to severe weather conditions.

Coast Guard personnel were also called to Gloucester to help the
local fire department fill more than 1,000 sandbags to help control
flooding at the Milton L. Fuller Elementary School. The school is
being used as an evacuation area for local residents.

In downtown Peabody, about 20 miles north of Boston, cars were pulled
from flooded streets and about 300 people were evacuated from a senior
citizens' apartment complex. Businesses stacked sandbags at their doors,
trying to prevent damage from water that at one point rose to waist-deep.
Court officials planned to close Peabody District Court on Monday in an
effort to keep people away from the city's square.

Many neighborhoods on the North Shore were hit particularly hard.
About 150 residents were forced to leave their homes in Melrose.

"In Melrose, in particular, there have been some reports of sewage backing
up into people's homes," Romney said. "The reason for that is that as the
groundwater fills the normal sewage drainage systems in our roads,
the pressure from all that groundwater begins to put real pressure on the
sewage systems that go into people's homes."

7. Even so, I'm anxious to see...
...if he'll attempt to squeeze in a photo op between his VERY important speech on courting Latino voters without alienating his "base"...er, I mean "immigration"...and the indictment of his "brain."

We already know being president is hard work...because he's told us so...but this week, I think Junior had better plan for some O.T....

Edited on Sun May-14-06 04:42 PM by Dunvegan
An armed police state for security...or assistance and rescue?

The government KNOWS security is the only important response to a natural disaster.

Trust in FEMA (a fully-owned subsidiary of the Department of Homeland Security.

What part of "security" being the most important thing to FEMA don't you understand?

8. I'm in southern New Hampshire and I've never seen so much rain.
Fortunately, I'm on a hill. I don't know why they'd bother the King with this - after all, it's mostly affecting the common people and we know how he feels about us.

More rain -- 2.03 inches, the equivalent of 20 inches of snow in wintertime
-- soaked Boston in just 12 hours yesterday than had fallen in the city during the month
of April, said William Babcock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton.
The rain was predicted to continue through Tuesday and dump at least 5 more inches across Eastern Massachusetts. <--Snip

I'm REALLY, REALLY glad it isn't snow!!!!!! :)
I think NH and Maine are getting the brunt of this storm!!

I walked down to check it out. Waters right up there. If it keeps raining all week downtown will be under water. There's a dam there, but it's pretty freakin' old. I've no idea how good a shape it's in. :scared: I live up on a hill from there, but still...:scared: :scared:
