Cavuto: "ollecting our phone records" is better than "collecting our remains"

Previewing his analysis of the National Security Agency's just-exposed program to collect the phone call records of millions of Americans, host Neil Cavuto declared during the May 11 edition of Fox News' Your World: "Yes, it is not great to necessarily hear they're collecting our phone records, but it's a heck of a lot better than collecting our remains."

From the May 11 edition of Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:

CAVUTO: Yes, it is not great to necessarily hear they're collecting our phone records, but it's a heck of a lot better than collecting our remains. The other side of this tapping issue after this.

Cavuto is giving him a run for his money.

I am so sick of these cowardly republicans. So sick of people who would sell our Constitution down the river to safeguard their worthless POS neocon lives.

29. To steal a phrase from another DUer I read last week
"Take my liberty, I'm afraid to die!" Patrick Henry must be spinning at 4,500 RPM in his grave.

4. It seems to be a variant of...
...the "It could take the form of a MUSHROOM CLOUD" syndrome.

Fear, fear, fear...24 hours a day, no waiting. Step up, ladies and gents. Get your fear right here on Fox News...fair 'n' balanced.

Those are the only two options?
What a narrowed down world we live in.

I'll stick with the freedom and democracy option.

scared, you picked up you musket and ran down to the state militia to defend your freedom. That's what the second amendment is about. You didn't sit in your home and shake like a Neil Cavuto and call for others to save you. That's what the Second Amendment is really all about. What a WUSS! And he's old enough to defend this nation, not snivel.

is about as likely to happen as catching someone through a wire tap planning to commit an attack.

a bunch of criminals hiding in a cave in Pakistan, and they'll give up anything to be "protected" from them. No Patrick Henry in your genes, eh, Neil? "Fuck liberty; give me totalitarianism if it saves me from the remote chance of death at the hands of a six-foot-six Saudi on dialysis whom our glorious government hasn't been able to find in four years!" What pathetic, sorry little wussy-boys these are.

18. Well there's a false choice
There was a former NSA guy on on eof the talk shows and even he said this kind of stuff really doesn't prevent anything. It's only useful after the fact to go back and retrace the steps used.

Neil really doesn't have much to worry about. Nobody wants to collect his remains.

19. Here's what they don't get:

WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS.

If Bush needed to make some law changes to accomodate a policy of making Americans safer, then do it legally. You draft legislation, lobby for it, get congress to pass it and you sign it into law. Shouldn't be a problem when you have a majority in every branch of the government. The way they went about this tells me that they *KNEW* what they were doing wasn't on the level.

And what about this bullshit about 65% of Americans approve of the wiretaps? I don't care if freaking 99.5% approve of it. Public approval doesn't make it legal. If majority opinion counted, then Gore would be president instead of "Asshole of Mass Destruction". I didn't see any Republicans standing up for majority opinion back then. Funny how that changes..

25. He is saying this BECAUSE...
high level members of the Bush administration have recorded phone calls of Cavuto and his favourite black prostitute.

And he'd rather be dead than have that come out, so he does as he's told.

31. What an asshole! Cavuto could just as easily say...
...collecting who we talk to, collecting our medical records, collecting where we go online, collecting our goings on in our house is better than collecting our remains.

It's a non-sequitur, it's a moronic argument.

Just wating for the 'scare card' to fade out.

35. Cavuto is engaging in an either/or fallacy
Edited on Mon May-15-06 11:56 AM by Jack Rabbit
This is a fallacy in which one attempts to reduce a complex issue to two simple choices.

It has been a hallmark of the Bush regime's WoT propaganda. You're either with us or with the terrorists is a prime example of this kind of fallacious reasoning.

Mr. Cavuto would have us believe that if we don't support the yuppie fascists in the Bush regime and cheerfully surrender our constitutional rights that Osama will kill us all. That is just nonsense.

Is there a way to fight terrorists and still respect the constitutional rights of private citizens. However, it is obvious that the Bush regime has neither the will nor the imagination to do so.

37. That only works if this mass phone record collection had any actual value
Anyone who's worked in the data analysis field, knows this is blowing smoke. If you have a mass of information like that, you'll be stuck with red herrings and false leads unless you have something very specific. The best way to counter terrorism is to stop invading so many countries in the first place over resources. The second-best thing to do (to confront the fanatics who still can't be convinced) is to build up specific human intelligence, invest in US agents learning Arabic and obtaining actionable information, and being as specific as possible. In these cases, it's easy to get a warrant to follow phone calls (which are necessary anyway to take any productive steps). The only way this phone record thing could be used, is as a cynical tool against one's opponents, political or otherwise.
