Rep Jefferson (D-LA): what should we be doing?
I'm thinking we should be all over this like a mud on a pig.

I know there's no question at all that even as bad as he might be, he's small potatoes compared to what the Repubs have done. His is a simple old timey, kinder, gentler corruption. His was personal and family pocket lining. Not a lot different than the League of Fat Bellied Sherrifs would do back in the day, all across this land of ours.

But it seems to me our response should be sure and swift. A loud, clear call to him to resign right now.

1. Of course we should. He disgraced our party and what makes
it especially heinous is we are so desperately trying to take back the House and the Senate. And this bum goes and does this.

He deserves to be Cunninghamed.

we dems are so good at passing judgement that we don't stop and think about the consequences.

Granted the congressman is likely guilty, do we have to feed the flames by throwing him into
the flames ourselves ? Doesn't he have a right to tell his side of the story before being
tried in the court of public opinion ?

We did that to Prez Clinton over a personal transgression and it cost us the entire planet.

Think "Dukester" and how the repubs treated him, let him admit his own mistakes.

Let us be the party that shows forgiveness, not the trigger happy party.

In my humble opinion.

30. Lets not be so quick
to throw him to the wind yet. We have not heard what he has to say. These are allegations, no more no less.

This smells like a Karl Rove trick to try to draw attention away from the much more serious crimes the Republicans are committing.

32. They have the guy on film joking while he's pocketing a
$100,000. And there's been rumors and innuendo about the guy for a while.

It's get real time here folks. This is NO TIME for hypocrisy. Either we stand for honesty in our government or we don't.

Jefferson hasn't been charged with anything. He's obviously in something up to his eyeballs, but why is this a big news story today? On top of that, the "Liberal Media" is all fear all the time today. Hurricanes are gonna wipe out NYC and kill us all! Natally Holloway is back.

Smells like a heavy dose of distraction to start the week.

this a.m. on CSPAN, his office on the hill was raided this weekend. Apparently that's never happened before.
But I agree; they want to get the name of that bad ole Dem and his cheatin' ways out there, pretty much ignoring all the repug corruption.

This will rile up the backwash, give them something to focus on. They'll be all over this all week as "proof" that the democrats are worse than any republican, because, you know, like, no republican has been found with a fridge full of cash!

We are not republicans that embrace our crooks. In this day in age with all the publicity in the news about bribing elected officials you think this dumbass would think twice before accepting that money.

I hope this is a lesson to any elected to office including the democrats - no one is above the law. Unfortunately there are bad people in every party including ours

I think it may be time to be an actuall good example by investigating him and booting him out of our party if guilty of corruption. certainly this should be done if the congresssional investigation finds him guilty.
This is in counterpoint to the Republicans die hard defense of Delay, Ney, et al.
Show America that ther Democrats are not part of the culture of corruption--do something about corruption in our own midst so we can better point the finger (guess which finger) at the Republicans.

Now living in Baton Rouge, this galls me to no end! With the positioning we have to finally take back this country this man turns around and puts a black cloud over all of it! Republicans will see this as a prime opportunity to diminish what Cunningham did as a Republican by saying "See? SEE?? The Democrats do it too!!!"

Not that that's any excuse, but they'll do it.

Well if Jefferson took the money, then Jefferson should go to jail. I'm assuming it's a open and shut case. But damn it it makes it hard on us, we're out here trying to turn the country against republicans because of corruption.

And we know how the repugs will spin this, everyone has taint. But the repugs have a different taint, I can't describe it but the repugs taint is much thicker for a lack of a better word.

But more importantly our Democratic leadership must publicly call on him to resign and censure him for dragging this out,if he is tried and found guilty....Democrats should be in the forefront of the movement to jail him and have his congressional pension stripped.Expect our team to be hit by repubs playing the race card and yelling about a lynching....reply-Yep,were running him out of town-not because of his minority looks,but because of his republican-like actions....

I think all this digging up corruption dirt on everybody might be good for the country. The corrupt will be caught and hopefully booted out of Congress and the rest will be too scared to take money from shady characters. I hope everyone that is dirty is caught.

Yes, he is a Democrat. But he is a small part of the corruption that has spread over our government. Not only do we want to see Congressman Jefferson prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but we want to see all those that have fallen prey to the Abramoff bribes held to account also. Those that giving contracts to limosine services to taxi around certain Congressmen, for poker parties and hooker services. We want to see the FBI do their job completely.

one dem is anything equal to the corruption and cronyism that was spawned by the KStreet Project, and corrupt contractors (Wilkes and Wade are certainly the tip of the iceberg.)

The media is likely to hound this story as a form of 'balance' for Ney, DeLay, Doolittle, Pombo, Lewis, Cunningham, Harris, etc. If they try to do the "mention one repub and then one dem" thing - we have to get on the media to go through the whole laundry list of republicans.

What official act did he do in return for that money - you know - the event they call a quid pro quo that interfered with his official duties - I believe they still need that in order to scream crime and charge him with bribery?

Of course our RW media does not need that legal nicety.

and I do not need it either as I have enough to want to see someone else elected from that District.

But I need that legal nicety before I join the forced resignation crowd.

Some of you might not love his politics, which were kind of proto-DLC, but his ethics haven't been called into question in twelve years as a judge down there.
