HEADS UP - GOP at work to control Pennsylvania papers and SAVE SANTORUM.
Edited on Mon May-22-06 11:15 AM by blm

This story just came out and I ran a quick check and they are very wealthy BUILDERS who have heavily supported the GOP, including SANTORUM.

We need Pennsylvania folks to get on the phone and PROTEST this sale.

NEW YORK, May 22 (Reuters) - A Philadelphia investors group is seen as the front runner in an auction to buy the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News newspapers from McClatchy Co. (MNI.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the Wall Street Journal said on Monday.

...

The investors group seen in the pole position is led by advertising executive Brian Tierney and investor Bruce Toll of luxury home builders Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the Journal said.

...
Bids from as many as six bidders rolled in last week for the two Philadelphia papers as part of McClatchy Co.'s planned takeover of rival publisher Knight Ridder Inc.

1. It's only a matter of time before the ultra-RW owns every
scrap of paper, blade of grass, and drop of water in this country. My advice: don't waste your breath. They're going to get the paper anyway.

17. Get it out there as an issue NOW before the takeover.
Get it on their flyers - or local radio.

21. Get it out where?
flyers aren't going to do much when all the newpapers, TV stations, and radio stations are campaigning for Santorum.

24. The papers don't belong to Toll yet. And national left media needs to jump
on this - MAKE IT AN ISSUE - email and phonecall - don't just give up without exposing what they're doing.to others.

27. What national left media?
the Nation? Vanden Heuvel gets 10 min on TV once a month. Chomsky? 10 minutes once a year. What media are you talking about?

there are ANY measures left to use - Spread the word at other forums and blogs fer chrissakes.

Does anyone here at DU really need to be TOLD at this point?

5. Articles will be skewed to explain HOW Santorum rallied to save his seat
when it will likely be due to voting fraud. And who will be there to REPORT the last-minute win and explain it away?

6. I don't think they will have a big impact on 2006 - but in 2008, yikes.
Right now Philly votes about 90% Dem. PA overall is barely blue. If rw spin in the local newspapers can cut the Philly Dem vote to 80% - it may be bye-bye blue PA.

I don't think they can turn it fast enough to save Santorum in 2006, but I could be wrong.

7. They can control perception. Look how fast media controlled the swift lies
to protect Bush?

If the race can be PERCEIVED to be tightening due to whatever reason the RW cooks up, then rigging the machines will do the rest.

8. Good points but they will probably have to replace some writers
before they can truly manipulate the paper.

KR has been pretty good. Those people won't flip to the dark side overnight.

But, perceptions can do a lot, you are right.

9. Nice catch, blm
The GOP already controls the national news media - witness the way they're covering up Rove's problems with Fitzgerald.

How much more control do they think they need? The only promising part of this news is that newspapers are not a good investment these days, hopefully they'll lose their money. Hard to make a profit when only 30% of the populations wants to read right wing drivel.

10. They make their profit in their REAL INDUSTRIES - builders always FIGHT
Edited on Mon May-22-06 01:03 PM by blm
with newspapers about developing more lands.

This is actually the same as the NBCs being owned by GE - GE makes more money off of their defense industry component so the news networks get used as the Public Relations Dept for the war industry.

These builders will make more profit using newspapers to promote their projects instead of getting in their way and blocking their projects with unwanted scrutiny. AND it will push through their political goals as an added benefit. Think tax breaks and DEREGULATION for their industry and their wealthy cronies.

The RW learned from RevMoon that operating the actual news at a loss will benefit you in so many OTHER ways.

12. It is a sign of HOW BAD bushco and the congressional GOP are...
that despite the near wholesale GOP worshipping media... the public has turned against them. The magic of marketing and media triumphalism for bush - doesn't seem to be working very well any more.

Don't get me wrong - I think this is horrible news, especially since Knight Ridder had some of the most independent reporting going on nationally over the past five years, and taking a far turn right in numerous media markets is a very awful thing.

I just wanted to comment, that we seem to have come to a turning point, where peoples' real experiences and real lives seem to have begun to be factored back in to their thinking when it comes to supporting various politicians and the policies which they promote. The days of 'run the country as a big PR campaign via the proliferation of RW media that spouts 'propogandistic position papers masquerading as research' that comes from the RW "think(less) tanks" ' seem to be coming to an end.

13. Anyone dumb enough to buy a newspaper for political purposes....
Deserves the finncial shallaking they are going to get.

Newspapers are great and can be profitsable. But you have to know what the hell you're doing or you'll lose your shirt.

Hoopesfully these guys will find themselves drowning in red ink, if that's what they're doing.

14. Yeah - like GE is drowning in red ink for using the NBCs as their PR Dept
for their war agenda.

These builders can make up the loss by getting their political agenda through and assuring themselves more tax breaks for their primary business interests and deregulation for their industry and those of their cronies.

Getting their political agenda through will be priceless. RevMoon has been operating WashTimes at a loss for 26 years, and he is not hurting for cash, is he? Nope - he bought protection for everything else he's involved with.

15. Where are the DNC and other prominent Dems?
Surely someone on the National scene is paying attention...I mean LTTE's are good and all, but in the end, it's money that makes the country turn. Somebody's gotta add to the pot or PA's gonna be in trouble...

If they don't, then they are beyond all hope of resurection, and we're on our own. Otherwise, Fox News is going to be sending many more press secretaries to the White House in the coming years.

I sent this to them today...maybe it is time to start mailing more regularly. Hey, the Colonel had to go to 1003 different places before somebody bought his recipe for fried chicken! That kind of resilience isn't bad for saving the country either!
