Wisconsin Governor Signs Abstinence Bill
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060524/ap_on_he_me/abstinence_education

"The legislation means teachers must emphasize that refraining from sex before marriage is the most effective way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. A spokesman for the governor, a Democrat, said most Wisconsin school districts already take that approach."

I hope thise kids realize that you can still get pregnant and get STDs even AFTER you are married...Does anyone think this stuff is worth it?

1. Well, I'm glad to know that my niece
who recently moved to Wisconsin, will be getting the *right* message.

Yes, we will pass laws to make sure the teens get messages that conflict with what their bodies are screaming and make sure that when they fail to live up to our expectations, they can fuck up even worse.

Woo-hoo.

Is a sarcasm smiley really necessary here?

2. See, the way it works...
...is that after you are married, the individual cells that comprise your body are automatically sheathed in the shimmering armor of virtue, thereby imparting bulletproof protection against STD.

They even get little crusader shields.

4. I don't have a problem with them emphasizing abstinence, as long
as they also explain all the risks associated with being sexually active. I happen to think it's silly to pass a law to do it, but if that make them feel better, that's fine. The Programs I disagree with are those that are abstinence only! THAT's just playing ostritch, and won't ever do any good.

5. according to what i heard on WI npr
we still teach birth control and sex ed, it just says that the ONLY 100% way to prevent pregnancy and STDs is abstinance. so it's only a tad backward.

considering you test drive a CAR.....

6. I'm pro-life, but...
I'm pro-life, but I don't support this abstinence b.s. We should be telling our kids about condoms, STD's, and all the responsibilities that comes with sexual behavior. We are all sexual beings, lets not pretend that we aren't.

8. says they can still teach BC, but EMPHASIS is on abstinence.

.....Republican Sen. Mary Lazich, a bill's sponsor, said sex education teachers can still teach about birth control, but must emphasize that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method to avoid health risks.

23. See; I would have thought
that the teachers were smart enough to think of that point being important on their own...not needing a law to make them do it. As I remember; my sex ed teacher made sure we knew that.
Duh.

7. under the comprehensive teaching-teen age preg. was down 27%, I

hope this new plan--I wonder what will happen!!

....Republican Sen. Mary Lazich, a bill's sponsor, said sex education teachers can still teach about birth control, but must emphasize that abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method to avoid health risks.

Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, called the bill, which takes effect July 1, shortsighted.

"They ignored the overwhelming public testimony, support and expert information about the importance of comprehensive sex education that talks about abstinence as well as contraceptive use," she said. "Abstinence is an important part but it is not the only part."

The birth rate among Wisconsin teens ages 15-19 decreased by 27 percent between 1993 and 2004, from 41 to 30 births per 1,000 females, according to the most recent government survey.

But the overall infection rate of the four top sexually transmitted diseases increased by 3 percent among teens during that time.

10. This bothers me....
"...Sex education teachers must present abstinence as the preferred behavior for unmarried people ..."

What's next? Laws against unmarried people living together?
The ACLU is already fighting that one in where.. Mississippi?

17. Well, it is the truth - if you don't have sex, you can't get pregnant
(short of test tubing, etc. obviously), and you are almost 100% guaranteed not to get an STD, either.

I don't know why "liberals" have a problem with stating the truth of that.

Obviously, we must also teach about contraception and safe sex practices, naturally; but the fact remains, if you want to remain unpregnant and STD-free, don't have sex. Abstinence works far, far, far better than condoms or any other kind of contraception/protection.

From Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal:http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=426936

Sex ed must include abstinence message

...Such instruction is optional, and the law doesn't require abstinence to be taught exclusively, according to Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin), who authored the bill...
