For the midterms, make you best, most wildly optimistic single race
prediction.

An example would be Ford winning the Tennessee senate seat. It is surely possible, but right now one has to be pretty damned optimistic to call it that way.

What's your call?

5. It Ought to...
Alas, there's still a vast majority who believe our elections are performed honestly and are not subject to fraud (surprisingly, this is still true even among a noticeable number of Democrats). Hence the need for the support of those who control the machines and why it doesn't necessarily go without saying.

Yep--I'll even pick the points.

It feels good just to say that it's even a possibility.

25. Considering one of DU's own made a showing against him sans money and
support from the state and national party, I think he's vulnerable enough to be scared.

The key to beating him is what we talked about in the "branding" thread--making fence-sitters feel comfortable with the big D.

He's in a heavily modern (not wacko) Mormon district and they really aren't all that enchanted with Hayworth.

We've got a respectable MOR cnadidate in Harry Mitchell and the Dems are certainly eyeing Hayworth, but I think they are really going to pull out the stops to beat Kyl.

I won't bet on this one--but it would be so sweet!

by somehow finding a way to run against both Kyl and JayDeeMeyWorthless?

Yes, the branding thing ...... what a great testing ground .... run the **party brand** against them both.

20. Now you know, I'm watching that race.
Pombo also will have a Democratic opponent...which would be much better for Democrats in retaking congress....so I'm rooting for Filson, the Navy Jet Pilot veteran out of Danville. But Jerry McNurney would do just fine as well....just that Filson is not seen as "liberal"...and in a district ruled by Pombo for the last 10 years or so, he's the one that could defeat Pombo. I don't know if The GOP in that district will vote for anyone other than Pombo...but I heard that Pombo's debate against Peter McCloskey didn't go well for Pombo. Heard that he was called a liar by hecklers in the audience - Good!

10. Idaho: Larry Grant over Bill Sali
How's that for wildly optimistic? Sali won the Repub primary yesterday for Idaho's 1st congressional District after smugly announcing that the republican primary equals the general election here.

He won fame this year by causing a statehouse uproar when he tried connecting abortions to breast cancer, bringing Democrat and breast cancer survivor Wendy Jacquet to tears.

For those old enough to remember Steve Symms and Helen (black Heel-uh-copters!) Chenoweth, Idahoans have not hesitated to send utterly incompetent wackos to DC. They may appear poised to send another. But I feel that Sali's opponent Larry Grant is a solid candidate with an excellent campaign team. This voter intends to work hard for Grant and for gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brady.

You guys used to have Frank Church, one of the most progressive members of the US Senate. I know that this was the 70's, but the fact that you used to elect him is a serious statement about electoral re-alignment.

34. My ex-NRA supporter but yella-dawg uncle moved there.
There seems to be a wave of RW Democrats heading up there and somehow jumping the fence.

In my uncle's case, he married a wacky jack Mormon lady that turned him. My grampa, his fatehr, is no doubt spinning in his grave, poor man.

He did resign his NRA membership over their support of cop-killer ammunition, though.

16. With even a mild Democratic "wave" I believe it is very realistic.
Hyde won the seat with 56% in 2004 - fairly modest for a 16 term incumbent. The district is trending Dem and Duckworth is a strong candidate. If Republican turnout is depressed and Dem turnout is up she may win going away.

23. This ain't a guess - it'll happen!! A double Murphy win in Pennsylvania
Although they are not related there's a democratic Murphy running for PA-06 & 08, 2 very vulnerable seats in SE PA. Lois Murphy almost beat Jim GErlach in 2004 and with Gerlach's association with Tom Delay he should be ripe for the pickings. PA-08 was represented for almost a decade by one of the most liberal republicans but in 2004 was replaced by a hard-core conservative who actually accused his opponenent in 2004 of being anti-sementic because she attended a private screening of Farheinheit 9/11. After 2 years the district has buyers remorse and the democratic candidate, Patrick Murphy, is a veteran of the current gulf war.

27. I'm getting more and more worked up about
Webb. I only know VA politics by looking over our south fence (I'm in Maryland). In the 04 cycle the one thing I wanted nearly as much as the Presidency was Blue Virginia.

In 1964 Virginia was the first formerly Democratic southern state to go GOP. It would be soooooo delicious to have them lead the pack on the way back.

32. Actually, Virginia went blue in 1964
However, it definately was one of the leaders of the pack as it went to Nixon in 1960. Probably due to Harry F Byrd's dis-satisfaction with Kennedy.
