Bush is a national embarassment.
Edited on Thu May-25-06 08:44 PM by joemurphy
As I was watching this travesty of a press conference, I was also thinking back on others I have witnessed, starting with Kennedy and going on down the line. How low we have devolved as a country to have this fool in the oval office.

Aside from being inarticulate and rambling, he has this uncanny habit of making sophomoric attempts at humor -- which invariably draw no laughs -- and then snickering loudly at what he regards as his great wit. The snickering is loud because he is the only person in the room that finds his insipid remarks humorous. He also sets just the right tone. He reminds us that we are at war, yet makes lame jokes about Blair's red tie being his most treasured memory of Blair.

We are now supposed to find Bush sympathetic, reflective, and vulnerable because now he has come to realize that "Bring It On" might have been misinterpreted and that Abu Ghraib (which he mispronounces atrociously) undermined our otherwise warm relations with the Iraqi citizenry.

This man is the pits. The worst President in my memory. Bar none. I understand now why his handlers are so reluctant to let him mingle openly with real people. Such encounters expose him for the cipher he is.

How sad for us. And the world.

4. It is unconscionable
that he got in this position and it is worse that he is still there. If we had an actual working government he would have been out of there before 9-11 ever happened. It is beyond embarrassing and we owe the entire planet an apology.

5. Joe Scarborough commented toward that very topic
that in comparison to Blair, Bush was pathetically inarticulate.
Another thing I noticed also, Bush seemed to be referencing notes in front of him even when responding to questions as though his replies were prepared in advance.

7. Without notes, Chimpy can only recite the same lame phrases
he has memorized. It's doesn't matter that they are irrelevant, don't fit, and come out of left field. Reminds me of Reagan, who, though he sounded smooth, also had to have 3 x 5 cards to keep his stuff straight. Especially in the last few years. Either Nancy had to stand behind him and feed him his lines, or he got it straight off the cards. Sad. We have slipped to even a more moronic level than Ronnie.

23. Boy, I guess I was one of the many who were commpletely immune to
Reagan's so-called "charm." I wanted to throw something through the tv everything that simpering simpleton came on to read cue cards. I was 14 when he was elected, and Reagan is the main reason I am a liberal today. However, my revulsion with Reagan is not as great as my revulsion with Bush. I always say: "I can't believe we have a president I hate more than Reagan."

25. Oh really?
Do you really think the country is finally recognizing what a prick * is? Just wait. As we get closer to the 06' election, watch the orange alerts come out regularly, watch for an October surprise, then watch the sheeple run around shouting "The world is coming to an end and GWB will save us". Gimme a break, this country is made up of assholes. Look how many voted for American Idol. I rest my case.

14. I wonder what happened to all that oil that was supposed to
sustain this war. Flowers, love, all that stuff has gone by the wayside. Now he wants to be the environmentalist? A la Gore? He's a joke, and those that supported him must feel the same way.
I noticed not much time with the pundits was spent on the economy; despite how great it's doing, it really isn't, except perhaps for some wealthy people.
Want to file for bankruptcy? No. Need a surgery? Not w/o insurance. Don't have/aren't able to have insurance? Tough shit.

I'm sorry, but I didn't vote for hime - twice.

Please consider the left winning back Congress in November as the first step that we'll be taking to try to turn our beautiful country back into the world leader that we could always be counted on to be. A Democratic president will follow in 2008.

22. You are forgiven then
Because you didn't vote for him twice, it must be tearing you apart to see what he has done to America's reputation. I know Bill Clinton was no angel or pacifist, but at least on the home front his biggest fault was that he was a serial bonker. Except for his so called social security reforms, I loved the guy.

You have had an imbecile for a leader for only 6 years, we've had ours for over 10 years, and no end in sight.

21. He was the MindWar pick for president
Decades of DOD research in PSYOPS led to the conclusion that the Vietnam war was lost because we were out-PSYOPED. Popular support was sustained in Vietnam while it flagged here in the US. The key to winning future wars therefore is to create the "psychological climate" required for victory.

ESP research returned few positive results, but it heightened awareness of normal sensory reactions. MindWar is not propaganda. Good propagandists must be aware that they are deceiving the public. The successful MindWar operative, on the other hand, must be a true believer. He or she must be able to develop a "rapport" with the target audience:

And this is nothing that can be easily faked, if in fact it can be faked at all. "Rapport" which the Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychological and Psychoanalytical Terms defines as "unconstrained relations of mutual confidence", approaches the subliminal; some researchers have suggested that it is itself a subconscious and even perhaps ESP based "accent" to an overt exchange of information.

Why does one believe one television newsman more than another, even though both may report the same headlines? Then answer is that there is rapport in the former case: and it is a rapport which has been recognized and cultivated by the most successful broadcasters.

We have covered the statement of inevitable truth and the conviction behind that statement; these are qualities of the MindWar operative himself. The recipient of the statement will judge such messages not only by conscious understanding of them, but also by the mental conditions under which he receives them. The theory behind "brainwashing" was that physical torture and deprivation would weaken the mind's resistance to suggestion, and this was true to a point. But in the long run brainwashing does not work, because intelligent minds later realize their suggestibility under such conditions and therefore discount impressions and options inculcated accordingly."

I think Bush was chosen at this moment of history because he had "charisma" and "rapport" with a broad cross section of people. People just liked him and wanted to have a beer with him. They believed he was honest and plain spoken.

Bush's failure clearly illustrates the Achilles' heel of MindWar:

Somewhat less positively, the failure of MindWar in this instance to be guided by only the most rigorous principles of truth and ethics has just as inexorably led to a substantial post-victory evaporation of that euphoric climate. Therein lies the Achilles' heel of MindWar. Invoking as it does the most intense emotions and commitments of its audiences, it must deliver the goods as they are judged by the target audiences. If the ethical values of those audiences are not respected - if MindWar is used only in the service of ulterior motives and objectives - the resulting "disintoxification" can be socially shattering.

Bush isn't the failure. Its the motivations behind his war that failed.

I'm reading Mario Cuomo's short but excellent book, WHY LINCOLN MATTERS right now.

Wow. I don't have to tell you about the contrast in that first Republican and the one we have in there now.

32. He's a petty liitle prick
on top of all his other attributes. What was that exchange with David Gregory about a month ago re Tony Snow? Bush bated Gregory about doing the job himself, then said "But you couldn't pass the background check, David."

He immediately retracted it and said it was a cheap trick, but that was because he saw the horror on the faces of the usually complicit press core.

What an asshole.
