Connecticut's Dodd Is the Ideal Un-Hillary
I caught up with Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd, who announced Monday that he's doing everything necessary to ``seek the presidency in 2008,'' early yesterday morning as he was convincing his 4-year-old, Grace, that she had to wash her hair.

I asked how you could run for president with two little children. ``There's never a good time but at this age, Jackie (his wife) and I can bring them along,'' he said. ``It's easier than with teenagers.''

Of the 11 people considering a presidential bid in 2008, Dodd has one great advantage: He doesn't have to position -- or reposition himself -- each morning.

While many in his party are straining to color themselves red, wishing to be reborn in a border state, Dodd's a traditional Democrat from way north of the Mason-Dixon line and happy about it. ``I'm a Sam Rayburn Democrat -- without prefix, suffix, or apology,'' Dodd said, recalling that former Senator Dale Bumpers forgave him for being a ``a northerner because he had a southern sense of humor.''

Hmm, I didn't even know Dodd was considering running.

Sam Rayburn, now there's a name I don't hear often these days. I don't have an opinion on him really.

2. No ill will to Dodd. but Carlson is an idiot.

She writes exactly the same irrelevant info (when not simply false) that the NYTimes and the WaPo writes about Democrats.

1. How can you run with young children: She cant call Jack Kennedy, but may be she can call John Edwards if she needs a clue. People do it all the time.

2: The Sam Rayburn joke is old.

3: Kerry has said a long time ago that he regrets his vote. (I guess this is the inside Washington media at work).

4: All Democrats have passed bills with Republicans. How is it something important?

In brief, there is nothing in this article who tells us why vote for Dodd rather than Hillary, but she reminds us the NYtimes article (how is it relevant here).

3. Only 11 possible candidates?
Edited on Fri May-26-06 04:06 AM by Jim Lane
The author refers to "the 11 people considering a presidential bid in 2008". Where does she get that figure? The exact number depends on the criteria applied, but I counted 25 "possibles" in the two major parties.

I excluded people who've said they won't run (e.g. Rice), but included people who have significant support and are still possibles (e.g., Gore). I also excluded Cox and Smith, two declared candidates for the Republican nomination who've never won an election. That criterion also excluded Sharpton. Nevertheless, I kept Clark on the list. The distinction was based on my subjective evaluation of each possible candidate's support.

Democrats (14):

Bayh
Biden
Clark
Clinton
Daschle
Dodd
Edwards
Feingold
Gore
Gravel
Kerry
Richardson
Vilsack
Warner

Republicans (11):

Allen
Brownback
Frist
Gingrich
Giuliani
Hagel
Huckabee
McCain
Pataki
Romney
Tancredo

5. The 11 seems to apply to the Dem field

since the author is obviously considering Dodd's competition for the nomination.

I thought that the article was interesting, if only because Carlson is well known and because many people on this board and other political sites have been so skeptical about Dodd's chances.

4. It's not right they get paid for this
There's 50 people at DU who could give better commentary on Chris Dodd, even people I disagree with ideologically. This was the biggest nothing piece I've read in a while, and that's saying a lot.
