Michael Hayden is likely everything you think he is .... or isn't. He's for sure John Blackbridge's (Negroponte) main man. We know he's the brains behind the NSA Spy-On-The-Serfs thing. He is to USAPower what David Dukes is to White Power and what Bobby Seale was to Black Power. To me, he's Slim Pickens riding the missile at the end of "Dr. Strangelove".
But at the end of the day, ideology aside, he's probably quite technically qualified to run the CIA.
The whole NSA spying thing was spun and respun. The people at Ernie's Barber Shop and Harriett's Hair Salon on Main Street have little clarity on the issue. Americans don't want to be spied upon. Americans support the NSA spy program because we have to use all the tools we have to stop 'terra'. Judging by 'the polling' on the whole deal, America is just plain confused. Administration obfuscation at its finest.
Hayden's popped out of committee with 12 for'im and 3 agin'im. One of the 12, I am sorry to say, is my own Senator, Babs Mikulski.
The Senate Democrats have three choices here:
1 - Vote 'conscience'
2 - Vote party
3 - Filibuster.
Options 1 and 2 are business as usual choices. And America yawns.
But Option 3. Hmmmmm. No one's been talking about it. It isn't on anyone's radar. Nobody's expecting it. No one's mounted a charge against it. If for no other reason than surprise it could work. It would show the Dems actually doing something. Doing it now, and maybe succeeding might even give them courage to do more down the road.
How would a filibuster play with the patrons of Ernie's and Harriet's tonsorial emporia? I suspect mixed reviews, but reviews as schizophrenic as their views on the NSA thing. On balance, I think we'd win some public support if the filibuster were properly framed.
Is it worth it? Should we do it? Or should we just wait for next time?
