Yes

"It is assumed that labor is available only in connection with capital; that nobody labors unless somebody else, owning capital, somehow by the use of it, induces him to labor. This assumed, it is next considered whether it is best that capital shall hire laborers, and thus induce them to work by their consent. Having proceeded so far, it is naturally concluded that all laborers are either hired laborers or what we call slaves. Now, there is no such relation between capital and labor as here assumed

. . . . Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration. Capital has its rights, which are as worthy of protection as any other rights"

Sadly today,
labor is now called "human capital" by the capitalist.

gotta love thomas hartman for reminding us of this.

1. Reality Check Time
Despite the present day GOP posting pictures of Lincoln everywhere during Conventions, it is wise to remember that the first Republicans (led by Lincoln) were the Radical/Liberal politicians and the DEMOCRATS were the Conservatives. As a splinter of the Republican Democratic Party. This lasted, really, until the turn of the century, when the parties switched places (see Teddy Roosevelt & the Progressives or "Bull Moose Party.") The change became permanent with the presidencies of Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt.

2. they've taken it to heart - see their tax structure
Since labor is superior, labor, and only labor, shall be taxed. Capital, being inferior, shall not be taxed. It demeans our great country to tax something that is inferior.

3. I knew it was a fake-out
No Republican in the last century would have said anything of the sort. His party would disown him and call him a commie or worse.

4. Lincoln would have to be careful in today's political
winds. He sounds like a Marxist. The degradation of labor is a partial foundation of class conflict.

How dare he point out that workers are humans and capitalism is alienating. :sarcasm:

5. Rutherford B. Hayes said similar things.
He was way ahead of his time. From a biography I read on him he warned against excessive concentrations of wealth and said that redistributive policies were necessary for democracy.
