Benjamin Franklin and the Hayden confirmation
Edited on Fri May-26-06 04:50 PM by SaveElmer
I think Benjamin Franklin's statement in support of final passage of the Constitution are instructive in this situation..

Most men indeed as well as most sects in Religion, think themselves in possession of all truth, and that wherever others differ from them it is so far error....

I can not help expressing a wish that every member of the Convention who may still have objections to it, would with me, on this occasion doubt a little of his own infallibility, and to make manifest our unanimity, put his name to this instrument.

People here are so quick to abandon support for any Democrat who does not agree with them on every issue. When Senators such as Leahy, Byrd, Mikulski etc, Senators who have fought long and hard to preserve civil rights, uphold the Constitution and the traditions of the seperation of powers, are comfortable with this nomination, I am willing, like Franklin to "doubt a little of (my) own infallibility." It is possible we are wrong and they are right, and I think they should be given the benefit of the doubt.
