East Timor isn't our story
East Timor descends into chaos
Monday, May 29, 2006; Posted: 3:43 a.m. EDT (07:43 GMT)

CNN) -- The number of dead in the latest wave of violence in East Timor has risen to at least 20, with more than 50 people wounded, hospital officials in the capital Dili said Monday.

East Timor's cabinet held a crisis meeting Monday as thousands of residents fled the burning capital and rival gangs prowled the streets armed with machetes, The Associated Press reported.

Australia sent about 1,300 troops to help quell the unrest that began in March, when the government fired 600 soldiers who went on strike against alleged discrimination in the military.

What began in recent months as a schism within the armed forces spilled over during the past week to the general population, which is divided on geographical lines of east and west, or those perceived to have been pro-Indonesian against those who wanted independence, AP reported.

1. We can thank the US-backed Suharto in the 1970s for the bloodshed
Edited on Mon May-29-06 04:51 PM by Selatius
He invaded and annexed East Timor and slaughtered untold thousands with tacit approval from the US government. Hell, we even continued to sell Suharto weapons even after he began the slaughter. I don't know why the hell Carter would do such a thing.

What we're seeing today is a legacy of hatred and distrust left behind as a result of the brutal occupation.

Other than that, try the torrent networks (although I wouldn't know where to start with that as I'm on dial-up).

5. Carter
was anything but a great guy as president. He armed all kinds of death squads. Now all of a sudden he is some saint.

7. The "civilized world" has supported the East Timor genocide by Indonesia
since it started in 1975. Which is why we have heard virtually nothing about that particular genocide. Some 2/3 of the population has been killed.

John Pilger analyses the Indonesian invasion of 1975, exposing the genocide and Western complicity leading up to the vote of independence in 1999.
A power struggle between political parties within East Timor erupted into civil war in the summer of 1975.
In 1998, John Pilger and David Munro entered East Timor where 23 years earlier, a team of journalists, including Australian Greg Shackleton, were murdered by the Indonesian army for daring to question the validity of the invasion.
