WP/AP: Sen. Clinton Kicks Off Re-Election Bid
Sen. Clinton Kicks Off Re-Election Bid
By MARC HUMBERT
The Associated Press
Wednesday, May 31, 2006

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton kicked off her bid for a second Senate term Wednesday, telling supporters to get ready for a Democratic sweep in November.

"When the dust clears in November, New York is going to have a Democratic government from top to bottom, and we're going to show the rest of the country what that means," Clinton told New York's Democratic state convention.

She was unanimously selected as the convention's official designee for the nomination by more than 400 delegates chanting "Hillary! Hillary!"

"We have a great national leader here in New York," said fellow New York Sen. Charles Schumer as he nominated "my partner, my friend" for the convention's endorsement.

During her morning speech, the former first lady made no mention of a possible presidential bid in 2008, instead saying she was focused completely on 2006, but that didn't stop supporters....

1. 2008, 2008, 2008
Hillary is no idiot. She knows that if she doesn't win decisively in New York, she
need not apply for 2008. I mean way over 60% margin. The radical right will spend
plenty on her opponent, no matter who it is (I hear Alan Keyes is no longer a resident
of Illinois), not to defeat her in NY, but to try to make her damaged goods as the
candidate for President in 2008, should she be it.

When Bill Clinton was looking vulnerable in March, 1995, Newt Gingrich once leaned over to
his neighbor at the Gridiron Club dinner, where Clinton had the room spellbound as usual.
Newt said, "anybody who thinks this guy will be a pushover in the 1996 election is fooling
themself." He was right then, and he is right now when he warns his colleagues on the
far right that Hillary will be no pushover if she gets the nomination. She's not there
yet, and being the Hillary the nominee will be a lot harder than being Hillary the
President, again, assuming either occurs. But I'd bet that Gingrich has it right.

2. New York isn't exactly in play...
NY has gone Republican once in the last 25 years. It's not exactly like it's in play for 08. And besides, Hillary is pretty much got her reelect sewn up. Massive approval ratings among Dems, indies, even an abnormally high approval among registered Republicans. I don't think any of her opponents are polling within 30 points. Though it's still going to be a long and nasty campaign, if for no other reason than the fact that the Repubs who allocate the money hate her living guts and want to piss on her political grave.

3. If she runs in 2008, she's got my vote in the MI primary
She'll win primaries in states like MI, OH and IL, because of minority populations in big cities like Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago. I look forward to the opportunity to vote for her.

I've got to find a "Run, Hillary, Run" magnetic sticker for my car. I need to be able to remove it when I am in West Michigan, but I do want my Grandpa in Traverse City to groan about it. Grandpa thinks that John McCain is our country's hope for the future, reads books by dead Babs Olsen, the Falafel guy, and Ann Coulter and believes everything in them.

He pointed to Olsen's book about Hillary and said "You wouldn't believe the stuff in there about her". I told him "You're right, I wouldn't believe any of it".

4. Barbara Olson was a very hateful person.
She died a tragic death and may she rest in peace, but nevertheless, she oozed hatred. It is hard for me to understand someone like that.

5. I agree 100% ...
Barbara Olsen was about as verbally abusive as they come..

But yeah.. when she died in that horrific crash, as much as I despised the vicious stuff that spewed from her mouth, I really felt terrible for her and her family..

No one deserved that fate.

6. I recall a C-SPAN caller telling off Babs Olsen a few days before 9/11.
All I can say about Bab's demise is, "No Bush, no 9/11".
