Why are the Dixie Chicks No. 1??
Do the people that buy their CD's really care that the three ladies rail against Bush policy, or do they just like good music, and don't care about the politics?? I happen to think it's the latter, but I'm sure their stand against Bush may have sold a few more CD's. I always thought country music was conservative with people like Toby Keith leading the way, so the fact that the Dixie Chicks are No.1 suprises me a little.

2. They're #1 because they do good music
The politics just give them more name recognition. Most people aren't that aware of the political stuff. They just like the solid musicianship.

11. it's that big group of people
who don't vote. They're untapped. More people buy and listen to music than actually care about politics. Those people tend to fit a more liberal profile too.

25. Excerpts from "Rolling Stone"
He did make the mistake of voting for Dubya, a mistake I'm willing to forgive. Sometimes people make mistakes; that's just what human beings do.

"I'm looked on as being this outrageous right-wing nut, but I'm a very conservative Democrat," says country music mogul Toby Keith. "My dad, who I wrote 'Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue' about, was a
dyed-in-the-wool Democrat. And one of the last things my granddad said before he died was 'Go cast my Democratic vote.'"

"I'm pro-war on terror. Whether we should go from
country to country, like with the Iraq thing, I don't know. This ain't as
simple as Afghanistan. We're going to Iraq for what? For terrorism? Have we seen any terrorist training camps? I haven't seen the smoking gun. And the haven't found the weapons of mass destruction. But the second I said in the press that I wasn't' sure about Iraq, people said, 'He's trying to save his career.' What? My career is boomin', buddy."

He still watches Fox News, like most Americans, and still thinks Baghdad isn't such a bad place (courtesy of a USO tour and Fox News, of course), but let's face it: MOST Americans support the principles of Democrats -- even if they forget from time to time.

9. SOME country music is right-wing.
Some is not.
Johnny Cash. Waylon & Willie. Johnny Denver. Don Williams. Even Merle Haggard (he finally admitted what I had always thought--Okie from Muskogee was a put-on). Charlie Daniels used to be a sort of left-libertarian. (Uneasy Rider for example).

Reports of the political scraps he & Kristofferson used to have when they were "Highwayman" are pretty reliable. Maybe he was just a Repub for the Reagan years though.

35. it's hard to say about waylon...but songs like "Willie and Laura Mae
Jones" suggest that his heart was in the right place...Plus, he tended toward being a "folkie" in the 60s...

Funny you should mention Waylon--I've been listining to him a lot lately. I've always liked him, but I've come to realize how truly gigantic he is.

On one hand they believe, as you say, that we're all "elitists" who are "absolutely drowning in money."

On the other hand, they believe we're all unemployed and living in mom and dad's basement.

Which is it, wingnuts? Make up your tiny, confused minds.

Republicans are ANTI-AMERICAN.
Republicans SUCK.

So why on earth does it surprise you?

The Dixie Chicks aren't only talented.. they aren't only patiotic... but they, like YOU KillerBush -- realize that Mr. Bush is a lying son-of-bitch bastard-child loser that should be imprisoned for life.

The album is #1 because probably for the first time they weren't pidgeon-holed into the country genre.

I think my favorite right now is The Bitter End.

It has a kind of an Irish Pub motif to it.

country music because their work (at least their latest) has a nice pop sound to it

I never really listened to them until now, but I don't think they have that twangy, pro-Merrika, fuck France, red state sound that I can't stand.

So, considering they've won people like me over...hey, I'm not too surprised they're #1. SUH-WEEEEEEEEET!!!! :applause:

Why you would put Toby Keith as a leader is what I find surprising.

Did you ever hear his song, "Whatever Happened to 'Peace on Earth'?" when it came out? I think it was around January 2004. It was banded or black listed on just about every Radio station.

43. Willie was "frozen out" of Nashville some years back....
He wrote some giant hits, but the power that be wouldn't promote his recording career. He sang "too jazzy" & he wasn't handsome enough. So he moved to Austin, started playing for the hippies & let his hair grow. Willie made a few hit albums & started getting awards in Nashville. Eventually, he even attended the awards shows--with beads & braids. He's not one to hold a grudge.

"Nashville" also decided that Johnny Cash & Merle Haggard were not worthy of Modern Country Radio. So they recorded outside the Nashville system. They won new fans, but never lost their true Country fans.

Texans (Willie, Waylon, the Chicks, etc.) & Californians (Haggard & Dwight Yoakum) have often had problems with "Nashville." Even the recently deceased Buck Owens should not be judged by Hee Haw; his recordings with the Buckaroos were HOT!

Historical note: Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings were roommates during part of their wild years. One can only imagine.....
