17. What do you think? Pretty sick, huh?
Would you say it's about time for an uprising?
I notice you are someone of importance here....you have numerous posts and have been with this site for quite some time now.....
I have visited the White Rose Society.com and I must say that I'm impressed with what I've read.
Friends ( and family ) are always telling me that I should go into politics because I have a way with people and have lots of great ideas...but for the time being, I'll just settle for the dream of a stable government and peace throughout the world. Until then, I strongly suggest that those of us who agree on certain "issues" should unite, meet, and start doing something to get our country back on track.
I've read many posts on these forums about what people would like to see happen, but given the situation our country is in, I do not see this happening anytime in the near future. I fear neither you or I will see it in our lifetimes......
Sorry if I'm being pessimistic, but we truly are in a sorry state of affairs, and if things do not improve we are SCREWED. Sorry, just my two cents ( and I'm a bit drunk now )

"Nothing less is at stake here than the entire idea of a government by the people."

Please read and share this vital information because our democracy should count.
They have deliberately subverted our constitution, and our democracy. Doesn't hat pretty much makes him the enemy to much of what the United States is suppose to stand for?

"Jack got off another blast at the GOP over their attempts to slip in legislation in the immigration bill to make voters present federally mandated photo ID's. Florida is once again at the heart of it as they have already passed legislation that will hurt the League of Women Voters. We all know what happened in Ohio were they didn't have enough voting machines in the poorest districts so that people wouldn't turn out the vote.

Cafferty: Don't kid yourself. This stuff isn't happening accidentally. These are calculated moves by people in power to corrupt the system in such a way that they are able to remain in power."

That quote from Cafferty needs to be plastered all over every blog, website, bumper sticker and whatever else. This is the reality, people, and it needs to be told over and over and over.

I missed this. I'm looking for articles to spell out the specifics of what Jack's talking about.

Here's some of what I found on the FL law:

SNIPS

The challenged law creates a punishing and complicated tiered regime of deadlines and fines. For each and every voter registration form submitted more than ten days after the form was collected from a prospective voter, the government will impose a fine of $250, while for each registration form submitted after the passing of a registration deadline, the fine is $500.

If a registration form is not submitted, for any reason, the fine per form jumps to $5,000. Most chilling to plaintiffs’ activities is the law’s adoption of a “strict liability” legal standard, meaning that no extenuating circumstance -- not even destruction of an office by a hurricane -- will excuse the failure to submit a registration form.

Plaintiffs say the impact of multiple fines would devastate the budgets of many non-partisan voter registration groups. For example, the entire annual budget for the Florida League of Women Voters is $80,000, or the equivalent of just 16 lost registration forms. At the same time, virtually everyone associated with an organization -- from a volunteer canvasser to the organization’s Board chair -- can be held personally responsible for paying the fines.

“What the State has done is radically raise the cost of doing business for voter registration groups,” said Mrs. Wheatley-Giliotti of the Florida League. "In effect, this is a tax on democracy and a tax on democratic participation that makes voter registration work prohibitively expensive for many of the state’s leading civic organizations.”

34. On the Washington Law
SNIPS

Project Vote's continuing work to eliminate barriers to voter registration took another step forward when community organizations and advocates filed suit today challenging a 4-month old Washington law that improperly implements the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002.

The lawsuit, the product of an on-going collaboration between Project Vote and the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, takes aim at a law (RCW 29A.08.107
) {b}requiring the Secretary of State to match identifying information on a voter registration application--usually a drivers' license number, state ID card number, or Social Security number--to the corresponding government database. If a match cannot be made, and an applicant doesn't correct the situation within 45 days, the applicant is not registered.

Matching records between two large databases is an inherently flawed operation for a number of reasons, including:

* human error by government election workers, including misspelling of names, omitting or adding letters in a name, and transposing numbers in a Social Security or driver's license ID.
* Asian-Americans, American Indians, and Alaska Natives with names that are especially prone to multiple English spellings, or flipping of first and last names;
* married women who have taken hyphenated names or their husbands' inconsistent punctuation of names containing apostrophes or hyphens;
* computer errors caused by file corruption from computer viruses; and absence of uniformity in maintaining, storing, and transferring computer data.

Several reliable studies have found database matching error rates of approximately 20-32%.

39. Nothing new?

"As Alito takes Supreme Court seat, Ohio GOP guts election protection

by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman

February 1, 2006

Ohio's GOP-controlled legislature has passed a repressive new law that will gut free elections here and is already surfacing elsewhere around the US. The bill will continue the process of installing the GOP as America's permanent ruling party.

Coming with the swearing in of right-wing extremist Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, it marks another dark day for what remains of American democracy.

Called HB3, the law now demands discriminatory voter ID, severely cripples the possibility of statewide recounts and actually ends the process of state-based challenges to federal elections---most importantly for president---held within the state.

In other words, the type of legal challenge mounted to the theft of Ohio's electoral votes in the 2004 election will now be all but impossible in the future.

Section 35-05.18 of HB3 requires restrictive identification requirements for anyone trying to vote in an Ohio election. Photo ID, a utility bill, a bank statement, a government check or other government document showing the name and current address of the voter will be required.

This requirement is perfectly designed to slow down the voting process in inner city precincts. It allows Republican "challengers" to intimidate anyone who turns up to vote in heavily Democratic precincts. It virtually eliminates the homeless, elderly and impoverished from the voting rolls. Election protection advocates estimate this requirement will erase 100,000 to 200,000 voters in a typical statewide election. By way of reference, George W. Bush allegedly carried Ohio---and the presidency---by less than 119,000 votes in 2004.

The ID requirement is the direct result of intervention by two high-powered Republican attorneys with ties to the White House and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). Congressman Bob Ney allowed the Bush-Cheney re-election national counsel Mark "Thor" Hearne to testify last March as a so-called "voting rights advocate." Hearne, whose resume shows no connection to voting rights organizations, was responsible for advising the Bush-Cheney campaign on national litigation and election law strategy during the 2004 election. See:

http://www.lathropgage.com/people/bio.aspx?bioid=8185 and http://www.lathropgage.com/ files/tbl_s47Details %5CFileUpload265%5C351 %5CTHOR_Insert.pdf.

Hearne, with the help of Republican attorney Alex Vogel, concocted a story that the problem with the 2004 elections in Ohio was the NAACP paying people with crack cocaine to register voters. Vogel's front group, the Free Enterprise Coalition, even indemnified a local Republican operative, Mark Rubrick, to file an Ohio corrupt practices act suit against the NAACP, the AFL-CIO, ACT-Ohio and ACORN, The suit was later quietly withdrawn after discovery showed that the operatives behind it were linked to the top levels of the Republican Party.

Ironically, the Republican Party engaged in racist and massive voter repression in Ohio and are now institutionalizing that very Jim Crow-style repression and selling it as an election reform bill.

HB3 also ends the ability of the public to conduct meaningful audits of voting machines. Election protection activists recently forced the adoption of an auditable paper trail into the Ohio election process. In a state where virtually all ballots are cast and/or counted on electronic equipment, this cuts to the core of the ability to monitor an election's outcome. The new provision in HB3 will make the paper trail virtually meaningless.

HB3 further imposes a huge jump in the cost of forcing a recount. In 2004, the charge was $10 per precinct, with some 11,366 precincts in the state. Thus the Green and Libertarian Parties, which paid for it, had to pay somewhat more than $113,660. Now the charge will be $50 per precinct, jumping the charge to some $568,300.

Finally, and perhaps most astonishingly, HB3 eliminates the state statutes that have allowed citizens to challenge the outcome of federal elections within the state. After the 2004 election, election protection advocates filed a challenge to Bush's victory. Their attorneys were attacked with an official attempt to levy sanctions, and then were thwarted from an effective suit when GOP Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell locked up the state's voter records.

But HB3 would now entirely eliminate any possibility of a state-based legal challenge. The only alleged recourse for those wishing to officially question the vote count in a presidential, US Senate or US Congressional race in Ohio would be at the United States Congress. There is now no recourse whatsoever on the state level.

Despite grassroots protests and bitter opposition from Common Cause, the League of Women Voters and other pro-democracy groups, HB3 passed with only one Republican vote against it (all Ohio Democratic Senators and Representatives voted against).

So the Ohio GOP has taken another giant step toward ending the possibility of any other party ever taking power in the Buckeye State. When combined with new campaign finance laws that allow huge chunks of private and corporate money to flow virtually unregulated into GOP coffers, HB3 may have all but ended free elections in Ohio---at least until election protection forces can somehow reverse the trend. .

Since the Civil War, only one presidential candidate---John F. Kennedy in 1960---has won the White House without carrying Ohio. This and the other repressive legislation passed by the Ohio GOP will make it virtually impossible for anyone but a Republican to carry the Buckeye State in future statewide and federal elections.

Bills like HB3 are also being lined up to flow through Republican-controlled legislatures throughout the US, including a very similar one in Georgia. "This comes straight from Karl Rove," says Cliff Arnebeck, one of Ohio's leading election protection attorneys. "This legislation originates with a demand that one-party rule by made permanent throughout the United States."

With today's passage of Ohio HB3, along with the seating of Justice Alito, the GOP grip on the American throat has very significantly tightened."

41. Unbelievable but so true- and that is why...
it is hard to get people to believe it sometimes- I find that a lot- there is actually so much and it is so outlandish -folks think it CAN"T be true.

I also think there is an important side effect to that law Cafferty mentioned in Florida.
The stiff fines for turning in a voter registrations late - but NOT for distroying them? as republicans did with THOUSANDS- actually I guess now they would have to be destroyed if they can't be turned in- I'm sure when rebub operative's groups hold registration drives-pretending they are non-partisan they will accidently not turn in the dem ones- so now they can destroy them LEGALLY !!!)

Brought to you by the home state of Jeb Bush, brother of the "president." What a coincidence - not!

Greg Palast, American investigative journalist in exile at the BBC, says the Republicans have a plan to steal the 2008 presidential election as well. Link here:

Looks like another big step has been taken in that direction with the Florida fiasco. When will we Americans wake up, get off our butts, and get involved to take this country back from the psychopathic thugs who continue to rob and rape it?
