Just heard over half of all illegal aliens entered US legally...
...on visa, then never left. If true, this dilutes the claim of illegals pouring in over the border.

Mentioned on ARR.

True? Anyone?

1. Even if true, though, it doesn't dilute it a whole lot...
Half of 11 million means 5.5 million people have crossed the border illegally -- assuming the 11 million illegals number to be accurate

5. you're right, of course, but...
...if true, it calls into question the concentration of efforts on the border and might it may be hiding what I would suppose is a collosal book keeping issue - not flagging expired visas.

Anyway, complicated issue and one that I am still trying to flesh out my stance on.

maybe instead of fanning all this racist hatred and xenophobia sending armed troops to the borders, we should hire a few extra bureaucrats to monitor those who are here on the visa program ...

but i guess government is evil and there's no point in that ...

3. Yes, only I've seen it as above 50%. Most come to the US on visas and
then just never leave. And they're from Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada, as well as Central and South America. I mentioned it before on some DU threads on 'illegal immigration'.

This only bolsters the case that pro-border enforcement people are not racist. Not only do they want to protect the jobs af ALL Americans, they want ALL of our immigration laws enforced including sending home those that overstay their visas.

19. July 1st is a Perfect Day
It's on Independence Day weekend, which is perfect timing. Furthermore, a "Saturday" is a day most working Americans can protest, because it's a scheduled day off. This is in contrast to all of the student protesters who simply skipped school, or those who skipped out on their job to join in the May protest.

22. The 'May protest'
was a day without immigrants, so you'd notice what it would be
like if they weren't there. Maybe you didn't miss them. What
is it about a strike that makes you think they'd still be at
work on a day they wanted you to see what it was like if they
weren't there?

Like lots of working people, I work on Saturdays - and
Sundays, btw. Are you implying that most working Americans
are better than that? that the people you'd like to see
leaving this country aren't working? and they aren't working
the sort of job that isn't nine to five M-F? and aren't paying
sales taxes when they buy gasoline or school supplies or
clothes?

I'm sorry, the above is overly picky.

My protest is against the stupid wall idea. Like it is
working so great for Israel? What was Berlin's experience?
Six or twelve million people already here; we could run up new
deficits in a better way than dumping resources in the desert.

Do you really think 12 million illegals were in the streets that day? No, there were legal immigrants and a goodly number of us born-American citizens out there too.

14. Yeah--"millions" of them. (I live in AZ--
if there were tens of thousands of immigrants crossing the Sonoran desert every year, I think I'd notice, since I visit the Sonoran south of Sierra Vista--a common traversing point--often).

I might add that the Sonoran desert is populated by low bushes, grasses, and lizards--that is, when there's water available.

Not a lot of places for "millions" to hide.

And Fox and the US really cared about the issue--that's why Fox called for a summit and Fuquad sent a low level State Dept. official to deal with a BORDER state.

That was a couple of years ago.

Fox has thrown up his hands and made the US the bad guy. No loss for him.

Although I could use some help in the kitchen. No nursery, though.

However, I truly feel the pain of those Metroplex housewives, "oppressed" by the undocumented workers they've hired. Surely they'd be happier staying home with the kids than running off to Nieman's & Lunch...

10.  Just Shows You Can't Keep 'em Out. Legalize, Unionize, Raise the Min.Wage
All these illegal workers have busted most of our unions.
It's hard to unionize illegal workers because the employer can call La Migra.

We need a labor movement again, and we can't have that if we
treat so much of the labor as our enemy.

Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 04:55 PM by blondeatlast
You and I both live in a Right to Work state, ya know.

If union labor was the law of the Arizona land, do you think our worst illegal immigrant offenders (employer-wise) could get away with hiring them by the hundreds--or more?

The immigration issue will mever be solved until Mexico is willing to tackle it as well.

Right now, Fox loves losing all those unemployed, poverty-stricken-beyond-what-we-in-the-US-can= comprehend Mexican citizens.

For him, it's all good, while he can make the US look racist to the Mexican elites who keep him in power.

Sound familiar?

15. It does account for many illegal aliens, but not sure what
proportion. The solution there is to let them "register" like they do in other countries. Extend their stay or change to work visas if they can get a job.

We have created an impossible enforcement situation with the laws we have. Our laws are simply outdated. They worked in 1952, but just patching up the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 does not work in the 21st century.

Most claims of an overhaul are false. They are just patching and repatching and in the meantime making the immigration laws impossible to reconcile and too complex for anyone to really understand.

It's lazy, it's irresponsible, and it is pandering to the nativists.

21. No one cares about those illegals. They're white
And, yes, go ahead and flame me for calling "anti-illegal" people racist. They are! They just don't admit it.

I have the ultimate example:

Local radio host in KC here is an immigrant himself, (claims he's legal, was able to get prefferential treatment through his employer, was Canadian). He is always trashing illegals, touting the classic talking point "These people are criminals, they broke the law and should be imprisoned or deported".

About a week ago he changed his tune. Sorta. Seems that he knows someone from a country that isn't in Latin America who was here on a visa that was long expired. She even lied about her citizenship status to employers, claiming to be a citizen. She got busted and is being forced to leave the country.

And he is pissed, because he doesn't think its fair.

"She was just trying to earn a living and make a better life. She's not a criminal, I know her, she is a good person. I am in support of the Government cracking down on illegals, but why did they have to come after her?"

Well, asshole, because she is a criminal, you said so yourself.

Okay it is next to impossible to find hard raw data on which to make decisions.

But here is what I found

Of undocumented/illegals--> 60-75% entered illegally. The other 25-40% entered legally and overstayed their visas or otherwise violated the terms of their admission.

FACTS on "illegals"

24. I don't know if half, but last Sunday saw on "60 Minutes'
was a rerun but we missed it the first time, how until several years ago, a pack of people from Mexico will just run through the border gates with the idea that not all of them would be caught, that at least some would make it. This was really pretty scary and upsetting.

Since things have changed they are "forced" to cut through the desert and there are so many who die that the coroner - don't remember whether it was AZ or TX - just cannot ID all of them. And many who die are never found. And they interview someone who has been caught before and is just going to try again and again. And the sorrow of a Mexican family that found the son perished in the unforgiving conditions of the desert.

And I keep thinking - if all the 7 or 8 million of Mexicans who come here to improve their lives - if they formed a grassroots movement to improve conditions in Mexico - how much better they would be.

A 1999 INS report stated that only 1 in 10 individuals picked up had no prior INS record (i.e. no previous documentation). Most were on expired visas, or had had some other error in paperwork.

Pouring over the border? Not likely.

And why is it that there's no one guarding the canadian border, or the New York ports against hordes of ravenous Irish?
