Senator Edward M. Kennedy: Denying Americans' Freedoms

With sinking polls and the upcoming election staring at them, the Republican leadership in Congress is about to pander to its extremist base again. Afraid of losing their lock on power, the GOP is reviving its effort to write bigotry into our Constitution by passing their so-called Federal Marriage Amendment, which would strip millions of lesbian and gay Americans of a basic human right.

Their political pandering is shameless, desperate, and appallingly predictable, and you and I can stop it.

The goal of the Republican Federal Marriage Amendment is to repeal civil unions and domestic partnership laws now in place in many states. It would block states and municipalities -- including Massachusetts -- from treating lesbian and gay couples fairly. It would force a policy of bigotry on all of us, and deny states the right to interpret their own constitutions and laws.

Our Constitution is a living document that enables all Americans to live freely in a democratic society. It's not a political device to deny or restrict any one's basic rights. But that's exactly how Republicans -- in the White House and Congress -- are attempting to use it. It's wrong for them to play politics with the Constitution and try to stoke fear and intolerance as a way to preserve their dwindling power.

Please stand with me against this shameful bigotry. Tell the Republican leadership to start dealing with the real issues confronting us, such as national security, the war in Iraq, and urgent domestic issues such as jobs, health care, and education. Tell them you reject their divisive Federal Marriage Amendment. Join me today:

http://www.tedkennedy.com/RejectTheFMA

Until now, the task of regulating marriage has been left where it belongs -- with the states. In fact, a number of states have had intense debates about the issue in recent years. Americans from Alabama, South Carolina, Wisconsin and many other states have grappled with the basic question: why not permit all Americans to have fair treatment under the tax laws, share insurance coverage, and visit their most loved ones in the hospital?

I'm proud that Massachusetts has led the way toward marriage equality. We recognize that being part of a family is a basic right and that government should do all it can to support and promote families.

Marriage is best defined as a shared commitment for the future -- a pledge to share in life's celebrations, burdens, and triumphs. Lesbian and gay couples face the same challenges that all American families face and they deserve our protection and respect.

Together, we can prove to the Republican leadership that we stand united against their effort to divide our country. Their pathetic pandering is no excuse for their lack of leadership.

Join me today, and preserve our Constitution as a document that unites -- not divides.

Say no to the Federal Marriage Amendment:

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,

Senator Edward M. Kennedy

4. I failed to mention
Sen. Kennedy spoke at the Mass Dem convention. It was a wonderful oratory. Afterwards our junior senator joined him on the stage, but didn't speak.

6. Free BRILLIANT consultation: Dem talking point, only needed once.
OK, here goes.

Someone with a really dry wit and acid tongue, like Reid, needs to say something like this:

"The Republicans won't stop invading your privacy. Their latest is the anti-gay Constitutional
Amendment. They have propsed this forever, usually in even years.

I have a question: Why do Republicans spend so much time thinking about male gay sex? They
propose these amendments all over the country. They talk about it all the time. Thes must
think about male sex and homosexuality all the time to. Don't they have better things to do?"

8. OOOH!
I love it. You know, some say that the biggest homophobes are unsure about their own sexuality. American Beauty is a great example.
